Police Blotter: Multiple Car Crashes Around Town

Black Ice on I-476 Causes Car to Spin Out of Control

On Oct. 30 at 3 a.m., Pennsylvania State Police-Media Barracks responded to a one-vehicle crash on the southbound lanes of Interstate-476 by the Broomall exit in . According to police, a 54-year-old Drexel Hill woman was driving a Mercury Mountaineer with two other passengers with her–a 57-year-old man of Drexel Hill and a 56-year-old woman of Broomall and heading south on I-476 just prior to exit 9 before she lost control of her vehicle. Police said the vehicle slipped on black ice, which spun the car into the center concrete median where it came to a stop in the left lane of the highway. All passengers and the driver suffered minor injuries and were transported to Chester-Crozer Medical Center.

Another Car Spins Out of Control on I-476, Hitting Another Disabled Car and Pedestrian

On Oct. 30 at 3 a.m., Pennsylvania State Police-Media Barracks responded to another two-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on the southbound lanes of I-476 by the Broomall exit. According to police, a 34-year-old Prospect Park man was driving a Mercury Mountaineer heading south on I-476 just prior to exit 9 when he lost control of the vehicle due to black ice and collided with the other Mountaineer which had been disabled due to another crash just minutes before. The Mountaineer also struck the concrete median and then hit the other disabled Mountaineer on its passenger side. In addition, police said a good samaritan had stopped to assist the first Mountaineer after its spin out and knocked on the window of the driver's side when the other Mountaineer collided with the car. According to police, a chain reaction of the collision occurred causing the pedestrian to get struck by the Mountaineer he was trying to help. The pedestrian, a 34-year-old man from Newtown Square was taken to Paoli Memorial Hospital and suffered moderate injuries, said police.

Girlfriend Hits Boyfriend, Car, Flees

On Oct. 24 at approximately 11:10 p.m., responded to 3715 West Chester Pike for a hit and run crash. Police received information that the striking vehicle, a 1998 Buick, was being operated by Christina Cavone, 22, of Broomall, the estranged girlfriend of the caller. Upon arrival, the man told police that he and his girlfriend had gotten into an argument at which Cavone had struck the victim in his left eye several times. The man told police that the girlfriend had left the apartment and entered her Buick which was parked facing the apartment on the rear lot adjacent to the victim’s vehicle. According to police, as the Buick was reversed from its parking spot, the Buick then turned right and moved forward, hitting the rear bumper of the other vehicle, forcing it straight into a light standard. When police responded to the home address of Cavone, police observed the Buick leaving the area of the residence. With the help of , authorities were able to stop the Buick and speak to Cavone in which she had denied being with the victim and told police that she was with her parents all night, said police. The woman’s father had arrived in which he denied that his daughter had been at the family home. Cavone was charged on two accounts–one for simple assault and another for incurring accidents involving damage to unattended vehicle or property.

Wet Road Causes Car to Spin Counterclockwise, Hits Nearby Vehicle

On Oct. 12 at 10:08 a.m., Newtown police responded to a two-vehicle crash involving two people at the southbound lanes of 11 Campus Boulevard by Bishop Hollow Road. Police noted the condition of the roadways were wet at the time of the incident. Upon arrival, the driver of the 1998Honda Accord told police he was traveling south on Campus Boulevard at approximately 40mph when he came to a left curve in the roadway and attempted to brake, which caused to vehicle to spin counterclockwise. The 18-year-old driver told police that the wet roadway had caused him to lose control. As the Honda Accord spun out of control, it hit a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier, which was traveling north on Campus Boulevard, just prior to the right cure in the roadway, said police. The 22-year-old driver of the Chevrolet Cavalier told police that as she was slowing down to prepare for a left turn into her work parking lot, she observed the Honda Accord come around the curve and lose control. The woman stated she attempted to steer her vehicle to the right to avoid the spinning vehicle but could not get out of the way in time. The Honda Accord hit the driver’s side of the Chevrolet Cavalier, causing the car to hit the cub on the east side of Campus Boulevard. The Cavalier sustained disabling damages to the vehicle and was towed from the scene by .
