Police Blotter: Overturned-Car Crash, Child Hit by Car, Ugg Boots Stolen at Sports Arena, Cellphone Thief at O'Hara

In this week's incidents in Marple, a car overturns on its side and hits another car, a car hits an 8-year-old girl on Parkway, a pair of $110 gray Uggs stolen at the Marple Sports Arena and a cellphone gets stolen at O'Hara.

Car Clips Tree, Overturns on its Side, Hits Another Car on the Way

On March 11 at approximately 2:40 p.m., police responded to a two-car crash involving an overturned vehicle and another vehicle on Marple Road and Anthony Avenue.

A 57-year-old Mercedes-Benz driver from Ardmore was traveling north on Marple Road just past Anthony Avenue when he negotiated a slight curve to the left said police.

According to police, the driver hit the soft shoulder on the right-hand side of the lane and clipped a large tree, causing the vehicle to overturn onto the driver’s side.

Meanwhile a 68-year-old Toyota Camry driver from Newtown Square was traveling south, in the opposite direction of the Ardmore Driver, on Marple Road and tried to bring her car to a stop when she saw the Benz overturning, police said.

Police said the Benz struck the Camry causing both cars to stop in the middle of Marple Road. The driver of the Benz did not appear to be injured but was taken by Marple Ambulance Corps to Paoli Hospital for evaluation.

The Mercedes was towed from the scene. Traffic was detoured for approximately less than 30 minutes and both the north and southbound lanes of Marple Road were fully closed. 

8-year-old Girl Runs Into Street, Gets Hit by Car

On March 11 at approximately 3:45 p.m., police responded to South Parkway near Reed Road by the Governor Sproul Apartments for a reported pedestrian that was struck.

Police said a 70-year-old Havertown resident driving a 2004 Jaguar hit an 8-year-old girl on Parkway Boulevard of Broomall.

The driver told police that she was proceeding straight on South Parkway from Reed Road when two children ran into the street in front of her car.

The driver stated that she had no time to brake and struck the young girl, according to police. The girl fell on the roadway and the driver stopped immediately to call 911.

Upon arrival to the scene, police said Marple Ambulance Corps was already treating the girl on scene. The girl was taken by the ambulance corps to Springfield Hospital.

$110 Gray Ugg Boots Stolen at Marple Sports Arena

On March 11, police went to the Marple Sports Arena on Parkway at approximately 10:30 p.m. for a reported theft.

Upon arrival, police said they met a woman who said her daughter had her gray Ugg boots–that were valued at $110–were stolen from the Marple Sport Arena earlier that night while she was in attendance for a St. Pius function.

According to police, the woman was unaware of who may have taken her daughter’s boots. The woman told police her concern for the lack of supervision of children while at the arena, and stated that when she spoke to employees about the incident they laughed at her.

The owner of the arena was contacted by police to speak to the woman about the incident.

Cellphone Stolen from Student's Backpack at O'Hara High School

On March 14 at approximately 4:30 p.m., a student from Cardinal O’Hara High School reported that his cellphone was stolen from his backpack on March 8 between 2:35 p.m. and 4:50 p.m., said police.

According to police, he left his bag in an alcove near the cafeteria while he was attending after-school sports activities that day.

He told police he placed his cellphone at the bottom of the bag with clothing and school books on top of it. When he returned to retrieve his bag, said police, the cellphone was gone.

The student claims that he has heard of three other thefts from the school on March 8 and March 9 in which all cases were similar.
