Police Blotter: Theft in Retail Stores, Home Burglary, Cars Crash During Snowstorm

In this week's incidents in Marple, a pickpocket at the Dollar Tree, jewelry and money stolen inside a home, and two separate car accidents occur during the snowstorm.

Woman's purse is pickpocket inside Dollar store

On Dec. 23 a little after 2:25 p.m., police were dispatched to the Dollar Tree in the Lawrence Park Shopping Center for a reported theft.

The woman told police she was bumped by someone inside the store and didn't pay much attention, until she later looked at her purse in the shopping cart and noticed the side-pocket zipper was open, police said.

According to police, about $95 in cash was stolen as well as a check for approximately $167, and her friend's watch. The friend had given it to the woman to get the battery replaced.

Police said the watch was a Robert Weil Parsifal watch and had a stainless steel band with Roman numerals on the face. The watch was valued at approximately $900.

A description of the person who bumped into the woman at the store was reported, said police. Police said the videotape in the store was reviewed but did not show anything related to this incident.

Police are still investigating this incident.

Women get away with bag of clothes from Old Navy Christmas Eve

On Dec. 24 a little after 3:05 p.m., police arrived to Old Navy at the Marple Crossroads shopping center when the store reported that two women had just tried to leave with two large bags full of merchandise without paying, said police.

According to police, a store employee confronted one woman and was able to get back one bag. The two women fled the scene in a Volkswagon Beetle with a Delaware license plate.

The estimated theft was approximately $200 or more, said police.

Police are still investigating this incident.

Jewelry thief takes jewels and a jug full of money from bedroom

On Dec. 26 at approximately 12:45 a.m., police responded to South Malin Road for a reported burglary.

The resident stated he discovered a silver chain with a heart-shaped diamond pendant and a white gold ring with diamonds missing from his wife's jewelry boxes, according to police.

Police said a five-gallon glass jug filled with approximately $100 worth of change and dollar bills, which was also in the bedroom, was reported missing.

There was no damage to the front or rear doors of the home and the resident told police he did not know when the items were specifically taken, police said.

There were several other items in the jewelry boxes where the chain and ring were taken from, but no other jewelry was taken, police said.

Police are still investigating this incident.

Car hits a traffic sign on snow-covered road

On Dec. 26 at approximately 2:45 p.m., police reported to the two-lane streets of Worthington and Pine Tree drives.

According to police, the driver, 69, of West Chester was going too fast in the 25 mph speed zone.

The driver was driving a Mazda down the curved downhill street of Worthington Drive when he hit a traffic sign on the right-hand side of the car, police said.

The road conditions were slippery due to the snow and ice from this week's snowstorm. There was also a passenger in the car, 63, of Media. No injuries were reported, said police.

The damages to the car were severe and was later towed.

Car loses control during snowstorm and crashes into utility pole

On Dec. 27 a little after 3:50 p.m., police reported to a car accident that was heading northbound on Sproul Road. Lane closed partially southbound.

The driver, 52, of Glenolden was driving a Ford Explorer and headed uphill on Sproul Road when the driver lost control of the wheel and ran into a utility pole, said police.

According to police, the road was slippery and were covered in slush due to the recent snowstorm. Police said the front air bag was deployed but no injury was reported. The driver's condition was apparently normal, said police.

The damages to the car were severe and was later towed.
