Police: PECO Scam Targets Non-English Speakers

The Newtown Township police recently released an alert about an ongoing PECO scam that targets non-English speakers.

PECO Energy has recently reported a phone scam that targets non-English-speaking PECO customers, according to a release from the .

PECO has recently received several calls from customers regarding a "Green Dot" VISA Card scam, the release states. The scam artist calls PECO customers claiming to be a PECO representative, and tells the customers that their account is past due, service will soon be terminated, and they can avoid termination by purchasing a Green Dot VISA card.

Non-English speakers seem to be the targets, the release states.

Not all callers who claim to be PECO representatives are scam artists, however. PECO does contact its customers on the phone from time to time—for example, to provide an update on service during emergency situations or inquire about past due balances.

A PECO representative should always be able to provide the following information:

  • Account name
  • Account address
  • Account number
  • Amount of past due balance

If the person claiming to be a PECO representative cannot provide all of the above information, it's likely that they are not a legitimate PECO representative and customers should not provide any financial or account information to the caller, the release states. Customers who suspect a scam should contact PECO immediately.
