Propane Grill Ignites Garage Sunday

The homeowner sustained minor injuries at the Newtown Township house fire.

A propane grill caught a garage on fire at a Newtown Township home on Sunday afternoon.

Chief Doug Simpson said a propane tank on the grill ignited the garage and fire spread to the roof of the garage at about 3:50 p.m. Sunday.

The fire was contained to the garage and did not spread to the attached home at 3219 Greene Countrie Drive, he said.

The homeowner, Albert Kzelian, sustained minor first-degree burns to his face and was treated at the scene, refusing further treatment, Simpson said.

Kzelian, who looked as if he had sustained a bad sunburn to his face, said he was changing the propane tank and putting a new one in when it caught fire.

"It went off," he said. "I put the new one in and it exploded."

Kzelian said his cousin and son were also home at the time but they were unharmed.

, Radnor, Berwyn and Media Fire Co. also responded to the scene along with Newtown Square Fire Co. and it was placed under control in about 35 minutes, Simpson said.
