NEWTOWN SQUARE–A water main break has caused lane restrictions on West Chester Pike in Newtown Square Monday around 9:30 a.m. and left approximately 150 homes in Newtown Township without water.

According to 6ABC, the water main break occurred around the 3400 block of West Chester Pike/Rt. 3, forcing parts of West Chester Pike, and both sides of Media Line Road and Bryn Mawr Avenue to close to traffic.

At approximately 10:40 a.m., westbound traffic on Rt. 3 was observed being diverted to the eastbound lanes which are now one lane in each direction. Traffic returned to the westbound side of Rt. 3 after .

According to Keith Biel, a crew foreman with Aqua PA who was on the scene, the water main break could have been caused by the high pressure which increases during the summer or simply could be the result of old pipes.

Biel said the water main has been shut off and crews will then work to dig up the water main. Biel estimated the repairs would take five to six hours.

The approximately 150 homes along West Chester Pike that will be affected by the water main break include Newtown Towers and the neighbhorhood around Surrey Drive.

Mark Walsh, a resident on Ashley Road, shared on Marple Newtown Patch's Facebook page that his home had water but no power as of 4 a.m. Monday.
