Underage Drinking-Related Incidents Reported

Newtown Township Police Department reported two recent incidents involving underage drinking around the township.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–On June 2 at approximately 1 a.m., was stopped at a traffic light on N. Newtown Street Rd./Rt. 252 and Goshen Rd., facing northbound when they observed a black BMW traveling east on Goshen Rd. making a left turn onto Rt. 252.

According to the incident report, when the vehicle made the left turn, it turned into the southbound travel lanes rather than the northbound travel lanes. Police activated their emergency lights to pull the vehicle over, but the BMW was traveling at a very high rate of speed, according to the report, north on Rt. 252.

Police tried chasing the vehicle down but occasionally lost sight of the vehicle during the chase, according to the report. When police reached Aronwold Dr. where the vehicle was last scene, police observed a man run across the street, up the front yard of a home, and into a wooded area towards Rt. 252, according to police in the report.

Police spotted the black BMW in the cul-de-sac, where the man was last seen running in the direction from, and observed another man standing outside of the vehicle on the passenger side.

Police spoke with the man outside the vehicle, an 18-year-old, of Berwyn, and detected a strong odor of alcohol. Inside the vehicle, police observed two cans of an alcoholic beverage, Four Loko. One can was observed open and later discovered to be empty, according to the report.

When police asked the man who the vehicle belonged to, the man responded that the vehicle was his and his friend was driving “because I thought he was sober,” according to the report. A portable breathalyzer test was administered which recorded a 0.146 percent blood alcohol content. The 18-year-old was arrested and cited for underage drinking.

Four Men Involved in Underage Drinking in Parked Car

On May 19 at approximately 4:19 a.m., police were on patrol in the Newtown Heights section of the township when police observed a dark colored SUV parked in the 100 block of Hickory Lane.

Police observed the vehicle was occupied by four men but the car was not running, according to police. Police activated their emergency lights on the suspicious activity observed and pulled up behind the vehicle.

Police spoke with the man who was sitting in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. While speaking with the man, police detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the man. The man told police he was 20 years old when asked by police, according to the report.

Police discovered seven Miller Lite beer cans in the front passenger’s side floor area. Police arrested and cited the four men for underage drinking.
