Woman Charged With DUI After Crashing Into Traffic Pole

Katelyn McCusker, 23, of Newtown Square, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and reckless driving after striking a traffic pole on the 3900 block of West Chester Pike in Newtown Square on May 19.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–On May 19 at approximately 6:21 a.m., responded to the 3900 block of West Chester Pike/Rt. 3 for a reported vehicle that crashed into a traffic pole off the southwest side of the roadway.

Upon arrival, police located the vehicle partially off the roadway facing southbound, resting against the traffic standard pole, while occupying part of the entrance roadway to the , located off of West Chester Pike in Newtown Square.

Police approached a woman who was leaning against the driver’s side door of the vehicle, who was identified as Katelyn McCusker, 23, of Newtown Square, and the driver of the vehicle.

According to the report, police asked the woman to stand up right and step away from the vehicle. While attempting to step away from the vehicle, police observed McCusker to be unsteady on her feet and having trouble standing while unsupported, according to the report.

In addition, police detected a strong odor of alcohol from McCusker while speaking to her, according to the report. When asked if she had been drinking, McCusker replied, according to the report, she had "two drinks at five."

When police asked McCusker if she knew how the accident occurred, McCusker stated that she did not recall any of the events leading to the accident. A portable breathalyzer test was administered in which a 0.178 percent blood alcohol content was recorded.

Newtown Township Ambulance responded to the scene to conduct an on-scene evaluation test. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed by . McCusker was placed under arrest and charged for DUI and reckless driving.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for McCusker on July 19 before .
