County Council Awards Contract to Boeing for River Port Surveillance

Boeing will develop and install a suite of security surveillance and monitoring systems to detect threats to key resources on the river.

MEDIA–Delaware County Council and The Boeing Company (NYSE: BA) jointly announced earlier this month on July 19 that Delaware County has awarded the company a multi-year contract to provide an integrated surveillance system for the Delaware River’s north segment.

Work on the $4.4 million Segment Delaware River North contract will begin immediately.

“We are pleased to partner with The Boeing Company on this important security issue,” said Council Chairman Jack Whelan. “The safety and well-being of the residents and communities of Delaware County is a foremost priority.

“This system will significantly increase the ability of law enforcement to protect one of the most important waterways in our nation.  Delaware County is home to two of the seven refineries along the river which provide about 80 percent of the petroleum needs for the northeastern United States.

“Additionally, more than two-thirds of Philadelphia International Airport is located within the county’s border at Hog Island in Tinicum.

"The Delaware River runs parallel to an interstate highway and major railroad lines and has a bridge over which 35,000 vehicles travel daily, which accentuates the importance of assuring the security and safety of the waterfront in our county," Whelan said.

“The integrated surveillance system for the Delaware County riverfront is part of an overall plan to provide similar security for the entire Delaware waterway beginning at the Delaware Bay and continuing upriver beyond Delaware County.

"The Delaware County waterfront area, known as the Delaware River North Segment, is the first section of this vital security system to be implemented.”

Boeing will develop and install a suite of security surveillance and monitoring systems to detect threats to key resources on the river.

Implementation will focus on areas near the Commodore Barry Bridge, Marcus Hook and Hog Island. The company will be responsible for the design, procurement, installation, integration, testing and maintenance of the system, as well as training law enforcement and emergency services personnel in its use.

“Our economy is directly tied to our ability to protect the free-flow of commerce in and out of our ports,” said Darryl Davis, President, Boeing Phantom Works.

“We look forward to working with Delaware County to develop and operate a multi-layered surveillance system for the citizens of Delaware County and the region.”

“Boeing understands the critical importance of protecting our ports and waterways,” said Roger Krone, President, Boeing Network & Space Systems.  “We are committed to continuing to leverage our company’s experience and resources toward protection of our nation’s infrastructure.”
