Marple Newtown Preps For Hurricane Irene

Marple and Newtown townships set emergency plans in place for Hurricane Irene.

We could feel tropical storm conditions by Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Tropical storm force winds are expected to start late Saturday night with gusts up to 70 mph, according to the NWS.

Heavy and record-setting rainfall is expected Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening, resulting in flash flooding. A flood watch is in effect for the entire Philadelphia area.

Philadelphia and and a Tropical Storm warning is in effect for Chester, Montgomery and Bucks counties.

The NWS expects Irene to bring minor to moderate damage to mobile homes. Possible siding and roof damage to other homes is also expected. They warn that loose outdoor items may be blown around and create additional damage.

Marple Township Prepares For State of Emergency

Board of Commissioners President Michael Molinaro said the township has emergency personnel on standby and the Department of Public Works will also be on-hand on Sunday.

Molinaro said stormwater grates are being cleaned and a back order of dry ice will be on hand at the municipal building.

During a potential major power outage, Molinaro said a game-time decision will be made to open up temporary emergency shelters in the township that are located on Sproul Road and Martin's Run on Paxon Hollow Road.

Newtown Township Emergency Management Team Remind Residents of Safety

has issued out an alert reminding residents to secure their belongings and urged residents to stay at home.

"Prior to the end of Friday, Aug. 26, residents are asked to secure or store yard furniture, barbecue grills and any outside equipment indoors," said Newtown police Lt. Chris Lunn. "Residents are advised to remain in your homes during the storm event."

Lunn recommends that food and water be on hand for 72 hours along with battery operated flashlights and radios.
