MNSD Director Rich Sokorai Submits Resignation

After five and a half years on the Marple Newtown School Board, member Richard Sokorai has officially submitted his resignation.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–Richard Sokorai has been a Marple Newtown Board of School Director since October of 2006 but, as of last week, Sokorai submitted his official letter of resignation from the board.

Sokorai, who ran in the school board election last year in a , four-year seats, .

Sokorai's official resignation was publicized in the Delaware County Times last Friday, June 8, in which the school board will officially accept the resignation letter at the next board meeting on June 26.

During his time on the Marple Newtown Board of School Directors, Sokorai held the position as vice president and served on the Budget & Finance Committee and the Facilities & Transportation Committee as well as the acting liaison for .

Sokorai said the decision to leave the school board after many years of serving was "tough."

"It was a very difficult thing to do," said Sokorai. Sokorai's decision was mainly based on personal reasons and mentioned his two daughters (ages 9 and 3), who are heavily involved in school and sports activities, and spending more time with them.

"It's just a lot," said Sokorai, who currently serves as the since last year.

But Sokorai took pride in the amount of work that had been accomplished with the members of the Marple Newtown Board of School Directors during his time with them.

"We accomplished a lot with the school board–we really did. We had a good run," said Sokorai. Though he can't tell you what his favorite moment was on the school board, Sokorai was able to share what his favorite accomplishment was.

"It has to be facilities. I mean, the facilities were in such disarray when we started the process and at the end of this year we'll get a new high school, new admin building, we saved the community center, and we have a maintenance plan for all our roofs–except one–will be under warranty now. We have a plan and a program now," shared Sokorai. "There are so many different things we did over the years but I'd like to say that was a big accomplishment."

The Marple Newtown Board of School Directors will meet on Tuesday, June 26, at 6:45 p.m. in the Board Room of the Administration Building for a special meeting to conduct interviews for candidates to fill the vacancy of Sokorai's seat.
