Redistricting: Vitali Drops Broomall; Adolph Picks Up Ground

Preliminary plan alters who represents Marple and Newtown in Harrisburg.

If plans in Harrisburg come to pass, state reps in and could shift in 2012. Following the 2010 Census, state officials analyzed the data and released a preliminary plan for redrawing districts through the state. Marple and Newtown Townships would have their boundaries shift, forcing the loss of a House member in the General Assembly.

Rep. Greg Vitali (D-166) has been a vocal critic of redistricting. He currently occupies parts of Broomall along Route 3/West Chester Pike. He stands to lose that and parts of Haverford Township under the proposed plan. Vitali has held public meetins opposing portions of the plan, as it splits .

Also, Rep. Joseph Hackett (R-161) would see his district move south. Locally, that means his coverage area would contract. Currently, he represents Newtown Square around West Chester Pike. He loses that and maintains only portions of Marple Township, and adds territory in lower Delaware County.

Both Hackett and Vitali's lost areas would be swallowed up by Rep. William Adolph, Jr. (R-165). Adolph currently represents parts of Marple and Newtown, but will now see that grow to Media Line Road on the west and past Paxon Hollow Road on the south. Additionally, nearly all of Broomall will be his.

Rep. Thomas Killion (R-168) will retain his territory in Newtown Square.

In the Senate, Edwin Erickson (R-26) will also retain his Marple Newtown district. His area could change from Delaware County near Glen Mills to more of Chester County in Tredyffrin-Easttown.
