State Warns About Potential Scammers Following Storms

After the severe storms that moved through Pennsylvania last week, the state Department of Insurance is warning residents to be wary of possible scammers who may attempt to prey on those whose property was damaged.

"Scam artists see weather-related events as opportunities to prey on unsuspecting individuals," the Department of Insurance said in a statement. "Consumers may inadvertently be duped by those who say they can help with your insurance needs, but they are not licensed to do so. Only individuals with a valid insurance license can settle an insurance claim."

The Department of Insurance reminded residents that home-improvement contractors in Pennsylvania who do more than $5,000 worth of business a year  must register with the Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.
