Three Merchant Marine Vets Raise Flag With County Council

MEDIA–Three veterans of the U.S. Merchant Marine who served in World War II raised the Merchant Marine Flag along with County Council in the courtyard of the Delaware County Government Center and Courthouse complex to commemorate the service of the Merchant Marine under command of the Navy in time of war.

The Merchant Marine is the fleet of U.S. civilian-owned merchant ships which transports cargo and passengers during peacetime and is an auxiliary of the U.S. Navy. They can be called upon to deliver troops and supplies for the military. During World War II, mariners died at a higher rate than any military branch. The Merchant Marine also played an important role in the Korea, Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars.
