1987 MNHS Girls Lax Champs To Reunite At Game

The 1987 Marple Newtown High School girls lacrosse championship team will celebrate their 25th anniversary this Saturday, April 28, on the field at the girls lacrosse home game against Avon Grove.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–This Saturday at 10 a.m., members of the 1987 girls lacrosse team from will celebrate their 25th
anniversary of winning the Pennsylvania State Championships on their home field.

To commemorate the occasion, the players and the team's coach, JoAnn Yusko, will present a custom team bench and plaque to current girls lacrosse coach Carolyn Firkser during the high school’s home game against Avon Grove.

The 1987 Marple Newtown girls lacrosse team went undefeated in 1987 and beat Radnor High School in the state championship game.

Of the starting 12 players from that winning team, 10 players went on to play Division 1 lacrosse in college. In addition, many of the players from the 1987 team work in the sports industry and/or coached lacrosse following college.

The team credits Yusko for instilling an avid focus on teamwork, perfecting stick stills and the motivation to work hard in every practice as if it were a
game.

Yusko coached lacrosse at Marple Newtown High school from 1981-1993 and had a record there of 315 wins and 16 loses. Currently, Yusko is a co-director of the Phantastix, one of the top girls lacrosse club teams in the nation.
