Champion Cheerleaders Teach Champ Camp

Marple Newtown Tigers Cheerleaders held their annual summer camp program from July 18 through July 21.

BROOMALL–Rah, rah, go team! It's time for Champ Camp again.

cheerleading held their annual, intensive three-day last week camp for aspiring cheerleaders. There were 46 girls from first to sixth grades enrolled in this year's camp, which was held at .

Marple Newtown head cheerleading coach, Tricia Dyal, led the camp with the help of other coaches and parents who volunteered.

Dyal said the most influential leaders at the camp, though, were the Tigers cheerleaders themselves, who ran the show and set up the daily program.

"In a typical day, the girls would start with a warm-up and stretching, move onto different sessions of cheering, dance, tumbling and stunts," shared Dyal."Later in the day, they would do a craft, play games, have private coaching, and at the end of the day the girls would review all the material they learned."

On the last day, they had a special performance for all parents.

Dyal said learning from the current cheerleaders is important because they are the kids' ultimate role models.

"The girls think the cheerleaders are it, and what they want to be," says Dyal.

She added that Champ Camp introduces the younger kids to what cheerleading is all about, and to spark their interest in the sport that she hopes will continue later in their lives.

Perhaps some day, Dyal hopes these kids will win national titles, too, just like the Marple Newtown Tigers cheerleader. Dyal said she's very confident in her team this year.

"The team looks really good. We hope to surpass last year's goals, and get to nationals again in Orlando," said Dyal.
