Donate to Special Olympics in Christian Massey's Name

The funeral expenses for Massey, a 2011 graduate of Marple Newtown High School who was shot and killed on Saturday, have been covered, school officials say.

The funeral expenses for Christian Massey, a 2011 graduate of Marple Newtown High School who was shot and killed in Philadelphia on Saturday, have been funded, school officials say.

Earlier reports on philly.com said Massey's family had been struggling to cover the cost of his funeral. But now, according to Marple Newtown High School Principal Gregory Puckett, all funeral expenses have been funded.

Massey, 21, was shot and killed on Saturday after the shooter demanded his headphones and iPod in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia.

A viewing will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday at Hickman Temple A.M.E. Church, on Baltimore Avenue near 50th Street in Philadelphia, the funeral will immediately follow, according to philly.com

Massey will be honored with a moment of silence at the boy's basketball home opener at Marple Newtown High School at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 13.

Massey, who was a special needs student, played football, lacrosse and basketball at Marple Newtown High School and also participated in the Special Olympics.

Anyone interested in donating money in Massey's name is now encouraged to contribute to the Special Olympics, according to Puckett.

Donations in Massey's name will be accepted through the Special Olympics from individuals and organizations and can be made to:

The school district asks that you please do not send cash or checks to the Marple Newtown School District.

"Our hearts and prayers go out Christian’s family and friends. As demonstrated by the overwhelming support to assist with Christian’s funeral expenses, it is obvious that Christian’s impact on society was much bigger than Marple Newtown," Puckett said in a message posted on the school's website

No arrests have been made in the shooting as of yet.
