Episcopal Academy Announces All-American, Athlete Award Recipients

Episcopal Academy recently announced their spring sports accomplishments.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–’s spring sports season was filled with a number of exciting moments that demonstrated the talents of the school's student-athletes. School records were broken, rivals beaten, and titles won.

This year, both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams are represented by a number of All-American and Academic All-American athletes. U.S. Lacrosse All-Americans are some of the best players in the United States. For the boys, seniors Jon Garino, , and Morgan Westby were named 2012 U.S. Lacrosse All-Americans while senior Sam Lawlor was named to the Academic All-American team.

From girls’ lacrosse, the following juniors were named 2012 U.S. Lacrosse Academic All-Americans: Mary Catherine Curran, Kristen Hinckley, and Lynda Michaels. To qualify as a U.S. Lacrosse All-American, a player must exhibit superior skills and techniques as well as possessing exceptional game sense and knowledge while embodying good sportsmanship.

Academic All-American players must exhibit exemplary lacrosse skills, good sportsmanship on the field, and represent high standards of academic achievement in the classroom. They have also left their mark beyond the lacrosse field and the classroom by making significant contributions of service to the school and/or community.

In June, Episcopal Academy held their annual Spring Athletic Awards. Next year’s varsity captains will be Douglas Trimble and Anthony Perretti for baseball; Patrick Bernhardt and Nicholas Mead for boys’ crew; Robyn Farrell and Allison Jacoby for girls’ crew; Margaret LeBoeuf and Victoria Johnson for girls’ golf; Kevin Gayhardt and Ian Strain for boys’ lacrosse; Lindsey Reder, Mary Catherine Curran, and Megan Hubley for girls’ lacrosse; Caroline Giles for softball; Thomas Boynton for boys’ tennis; Charles Fox, Daniel McCormick, and Timothy Pope for boys’ track/field; and Kelly Szafara, Mikaela Kilmer, and Keri Boyce for girls’ track/field. Most improved athletes were Anthony Perretti for baseball; Patrick Bernhardt for boys’ crew; Elisabeth Freese for girls’ crew; Ashley Mauch for girls’ golf; G. Trupert Ortlieb for boys’ lacrosse; Briana Narzikul for girls’ lacrosse; Caroline Giles for softball; Rohan Rajagopalan for boys’ tennis; Samuel Pope (Field) and Ryan Quinlan (Track) for boys’ track/field; and Gianna Pileggi for girls’ track/field.

Junior varsity captains for 2012 spring season were also announced: Austin Morgan for JV baseball; Joseph Chambers for 9th grade baseball; David Palumbo for JV boys’ crew; Shreya Reddy for JV girls’ crew; Guillaume Furey for novice boys’ crew; Livia Wallick for novice girls’ crew; Colin Reder, John Saile, and Drew Debacco for JV boys’ lacrosse; Belle DiMarco and Christy Palazzese for JV girls’ lacrosse; and Matthew Vegari for JV tennis. The JV most imporved athletes were: Sean Doyle for JV baseball; Cullen McShane for 9th grade baseball; Intesar Janjua for JV boys’ crew; Caroline Purtill for JV girls’ crew; Lea Yao for novice boys’ crew; Celeste (Simmi) Ayjian for novice girls’ crew; Ryan Whayland for JV boys’ lacrosse; Carla Boyce for JV girls’ lacrosse; and J. Wills Singley for JV tennis.

Special awards were given for each sports team were as follows: for baseball, Douglas Trimble, The Eddie Collins Bat (most hits) and The Class of 1914 Gold Baseball; Anthony Perretti, The Bob Scott Memorial Cup; Collin Wright, The Class of 1999 Baseball Award; and Russell Rhoads, The James W. Straub Memorial Prize; for boys’ crew, Benjamin Pusey, The E.A. Oar Award; Jill Barton, The Scholar Athlete Award; and Nicholas Mead, The Mind, Body, and Spirit Prize; for girls’ crew, Jordan Marinchak, The E.A. Oar Award; Elisabeth Freese, The Scholar Athlete Award; and Patricia Tyson, The Mind, Body, and Spirit Prize; for girls’ golf, Marian Prim, The EA Girls’ Golf Prize and The Mind, Body, Spirit Prize; for boys’ lacrosse, Tyler Odell, The Stick Lacrosse Award; Connor Haab and Morgan Westby, The Team of 1977 Lacrosse Award; Henry Coote, The Episcopal Academy Lacrosse Award; Samuel Lawlor, The Donald J. Reape Memorial Award; and  Jonathan Garino, The Coach John H. Wynne, Jr. Lacrosse Award; for girls’ lacrosse, Alicia Singley, The Team of 1983 Girls’ Lacrosse Award; Lindsey Reder, The Championship Team of 1995 Girls’ Lacrosse Bowl; Megan Hubley, The Megan McFarland Prize; Kristen Hinckley, The Ground Ball Award; and Kelly Martellucci, The Episcopal Academy Defender Award; for softball, Alexandra Viscusi, The Team of 2000 Softball Award and The EA Golden Glove; Sarah McKay, Talbot Trophy for Excellence in Softball, and Gabrielle Donatucci, The EA Gold Softball; for boys’ tennis, D. Harrison McCormick, The John T. McCullough Cup, The George C. Shafer, Jr. Tennis Award, and The Scholar Athlete Award; for boys track, Patrick Sernyak, The Class of 1910 Medal; Charles Kinzig, The Scholar Athlete Award; and Mohammed Toure, The Mind, Body, and Spirit Prize; and for girls’ track, Caroline Ciccotti, The 1995 Girls’ Track Award; Grace Austin, The Scholar Athlete Award; and Jacqueline Chakejian, The Mind, Body, and Spirit Award. Other awards given were: Shane Malenfant, The Class of 1912 Medal (football/scholarship); Julia Lake, The Robert Urbani Athletic Service Award; Timothy Pope, The David A. DeMoss Memorial Award; Coach Brian Kline, The Borkowski Coaching Award; Coach Laurie Smith, The Keegan Award; and Patrick Sernyak, The Richard Guild Crockett Award.

Other school awards and championships were recognized: for girls’ lacrosse, InterAc Champions and PAISAA Champions; for  boys’ lacrosse, InterAc Invitational Tournament Champions; for girls’ crew, varsity quad, InterAc Champions, City Championships Silver Medal, Stotesbury Regatta Silver Medal, and Scholastic National Regatta Silver Medal; varsity eight, InterAc Champions; lightweight four, Scholastic National Regatta Silver Medal; and JV four, City Championships Silver Medal); and for boys’ crew, varsity four, City Champions, Stotesbury Regatta Bronze Medal, and Scholastic National Regatta Silver Medal.

School records were rcognized in girls’ track for 800M (Kelly Szafara), 1600M (), 3200M (Kristin Greenwood), 4X400M (Leslie MacManus, Keri Boyce, Leighann Adelizzi, and Kelly Szafara), 4X800M (Leslie MacManus, Jacqueline Chakejian, Kristin Greenwood, and Kelly Szafara), and the Spring Medley Relay (Keri Boyce, Tara Boyle, Leighann Adelizzi, and Leslie MacManus).

The ceremony closed with the presentation of the school shield created for 2012 which lists the tri-sport winners. Tri-sport award winners for 2011-12 are: from the Freshman class, Leighann Adelizzi, Maria Kilcullen, and Julianne Longen; from the Sophomore class, Alexis Curry, Patrick Espe, Anthony Feliziani, Taryn Gallagher, Michael Quinlan, Ryan Quinlan, and Michael Watkins; from the Junior class, Tyler Chambers, Alana Dumas, Daniel Hager, David Hammel, Kristen Hinckley, Meghan Hubley, Matthew London, Steven Lucey, Michelle McCann, Cluny McPherson, Nisha Meyer, William Miller, Trupert Ortlieb, Ian Strain, Adam Strouss, Kelly Szafara, and Grace van Arkel; and from the Senior class, Jacqueline Chakejian, Caroline Ciccotti, John Dordelman, Kristin Greenwood, Charles Kinzig, Samuel, Lawlor, Leslie MacManus, Sean O’Reilly, Marian Prim, Patrick Sernyak, Alicia Singley, and Marco Testaiuti.
