Episcopal Academy Senior Receives MIT Award

NEWTOWN SQUARE– announced high school senior Mohammed Toure, of Darby, was recently awarded with the 2011 William H. Ramsey Award from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

Toure spent the summer of 2011 participating in MIT’s Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES) Program. This program is a “rigorous six-and-a-half week residential summer program that gives 70 to 80 rising high school seniors from across the country the opportunity to experience a demanding academic atmosphere and begin building the self-confidence necessary for success in college and beyond,” according to the program.

According to the school, after a rigorous selection process for the 2011 class, 80 students were selected from 1,400 applicants. Their class theme was “Forging the Tools of Tomorrow.”

Based on his exceptional performance, Mohammed Toure was awarded the 2011 William H. Ramsey Award for best all around performance by a male in the program based on high academic performance, proven leadership, and exhibited willingness to assist others, according to the school's press release. A similar award is presented to the top female participant. The Ramsey award is the highest honor given by the program.

Toure was Marple Newtown Patch's Whiz Kid in August. of this 17-year-old high school senior overcoming his war-torn country of Liberia and surviving a refugee camp before coming to the United States.

In just three years at Episcopal Academy, Toure has made the most of the opportunities that have come his way. Toure is now the co-president of the student body at the school.

In our previous interview, he states, "It feels good like I accomplished something. I don't know how to put this in words but it was just a long journey. I feel like I have contributed to certain things and I'm also glad that people have acknowledged that."
