Families
Invited to 4-H Poultry Fest

The Delaware County 4-H Poultry Club invites the community to an afternoon of poultry education workshops, games, fundraising, and poultry showmanship on Sunday, September 9 from 12-5 p.m. at the 4-H Farm & Educational Center at the Garrett Williamson Foundation, 395 Bishop Hollow
Road, Newtown Square, PA 19073 in Delaware County.

Come and learn about keeping poultry at home, egg layers, pheasant, turkeys and meat birds. Visit the poultry at the 4-H farm: layers (Red Sex-Sal Link & White Leghorns); heritage chicken breeds (including
Silkies, Japanese Bantam, Ameraucanas, Mille Fleur D’uccles and more); broad breasted white production turkeys and see Chinese Ring-necked Pheasants in the
4-H outdoor pen.

There is a $2 per person admission fee; children under 4 are free.  Family members of all ages may participate in lively activities such as an egg toss, pheasant bean bag toss, feed art and the local but famous, “Chicken
Dance.” Co-author of the Chicken Whisperer Guide to Raising Chickens, Dr. Brigid McCrea, will be speaking
on “Breeding through Brooding Chickens:
what you need to know for backyard flocks.”  A book purchase & signing will be available on site. 4-H Showmanship will be taught and competition will be held
according to age. Ribbons will be awarded for egg judging (bring a dozen of your home flock eggs for judging), and poultry showmanship for youth, using 4-H birds. (Due to bio-security issues, no outside birds may be brought to this event.)

Other topics will include Natural Egg Dyeing, Poultry Nutrition for the Family Meal Time from a Delaware County Extension Registered Dietician, and Poultry Meat Handling from a local area butcher and chef, Dispelling Myths of Egg Quality from Eggland’s Best, Inc. Company, Master Gardener Recommendations for Composting with Chicken Manure, and Breeds of Chicken for the Home Flock, presented by an educator from CSA and Hillside Farm in Media.  Vendors will be attending with educational information about chickens and chicken feed. Dr. Sherrill Davison, University of Pennsylvania veterinarian at
New Bolton Center will be on site to answer questions pertaining to poultry disease & pests. Some 4-H chickens will be available for purchase to take home for your home flock. All proceeds will benefit the Delaware County 4-H
Poultry Club.

"Poultry Fest 2012 will give the general public the opportunity to relax and get to know poultry in a fun and
healthy environment," said Nora Hopson, leader of the Delaware County 4-H Poultry Club. The event is being organized by the Delaware County 4-H Poultry Club to educate families on poultry topics of interest.

With the help of 4-H volunteer leaders, the Delaware County 4-H program promotes hands-on active involvement in experiences that teach youth about all poultry projects:  layers, heritage chickens, turkeys, and
pheasants, as well other topics such as showmanship and meat production.  For more information about 4-H in Delaware County, go to http://extension.psu.edu/delaware or call the extension office at 610-690-2655.
