Marple Newtown High School's 9/11 Ceremony

Marple Newtown High School Plans September 11th 10-year Memorial Ceremony

Agenda:

  • The morning of Friday, September 9, 2011, the parking lot in front of the school and curbside parking will be blocked off and cars will be directed to park around the back of the school.
  • From 7:40a.m. until 8:50a.m., Student Council and National Honor Society students will place approximately 3,000 flags in the lawn in front of the school. Each flag represents a life lost on September 11th.
  • At approximately 8:50a.m., all students, faculty, staff members, and contractors will gather in the parking lot in front of the flag pole.
  • The Marple and Newtown Township Police and Fire Companies will block off Media Line Road between Highland and Eastburn Avenues.
  • The Marple and Newtown Township Police and Fire Companies will gather on the street side of the flag pole. Fire and Police vehicles will be on display on Media Line Road.
  • Principal Dr. Ray McFall will begin the memorial ceremony saying a few words about September 11th.


Three local veterans groups joined forces and became known as the “Marple Newtown Combined Veterans Alliance.” This group is certified by the Department of Defense (DOD) to perform graveside ceremonies and they consist of the following organizations:

  • American Legion Marple Memorial Post #805 in Broomall.
  • The General Smedley D. Butler Detachment #741 of the Marine Corps League in Newtown Square.
  • Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7390 in Broomall.

The Marple Newtown Combined Veterans Alliance will raise the flag while our band students play the National Anthem.

A band student will play taps.

The honor guard consisting of seven riflemen and a squad leader along with four color guards will fire three volleys in honor of the deceased veterans.

Students will be dismissed to return to class at approximately 9:15 a.m.
