Horowitz: No Storm Damage to Schools

According to Marple Newtown School District Superintendent Dr. Merle Horowitz, teachers will be back at the schools this week as scheduled and students will still start school on Sept. 6.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–Though Irene made her way with certain parts of the area with , schools managed fairly well.

"Our schools are luckily all fine," said Superintendent Dr. Merle Horowitz over a phone interview on Monday, who lost power in her own home. "There was no flooding at the schools and all schools are open."

On Monday, the district opened its doors and Marple Newtown teachers attended the teacher kickoff orientation at as planned.

"We had our wonderful teacher kickoff this morning," shared Horowitz on Monday. "The teachers are scheduled to be back in this week."

Although the district schools appeared to be unscathed from the storm, the wasn't so lucky.

According to Horowitz, the community center, which is , lost power and experienced flooding. The community center also holds the district's administrative offices.

When Marple Newtown Patch spoke with Horowitz on Monday afternoon, she said, "The Gauntlett Center is the only one with flooding and they're pumping it out as we speak."

Schools will open its doors to Marple Newtown students on Sept. 6 as scheduled.
