Knights Prepare for District Championship

Delaware County Christian School's Cinderella story is coming into fruition with their place in the PIAA District 1 Class A championship.

NEWTOWN SQUARE– football coach Jim Favino will use this week to focus on forgetting and looking ahead—and there is a lot to look ahead for the Knights.

In just their second year as a varsity program, Delco Christian will be playing in the PIAA District 1 Class A championship, against defending district champion Calvary Christian, on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. at a site to be determined.

The Knights are 7-1, after suffering their first setback of the season in a 47-21 loss to speedy Springfield (Montco) last Friday.

“I think we learned from that,” said Delco Christian senior Mike Monaghan about the win. “We know we have to come out harder and faster if we’re going to beat Calvary Christian"

Monaghan continued, "Beating them earlier kicked off our season. But we’re still a team that thinks we have something to prove.”

Coach Favino knows taking on Calvary and beating them twice is no easy task.

“I’d say the pressure is on us,” Favino said. “Calvary is very good, and well coached, because you know [Calvary coach and former Philadelphia Eagle] Mike Riechenbach is breaking down film and looking at things."

But the Knights are hungry to prove it to themselves that they're still in this.

"Maybe it is a good thing about Springfield [Montco]. We realized we can be beat," said Favinio referring to last week's game. "These kids still do have something to prove. They set high standards for themselves this year, and it’s about proving things to themselves.”
