NEWTOWN SQUARE–In recognition of January as School Board Appreciation Month, members were honored at a meeting on Tuesday night.

"Every year in January we salute a special group of people, who help run the schools in our community–the nine elected members of our school board," addressed Superintendent Merle Horowitz to the public. "School directors are a special breed, who devote on average 20 hours a month or more in the case of Marple Newtown to the job."

As a school board member, Horowitz said they make difficult budget decisions, hire staff, selecte textbooks, review bus schedules, monitor student progress and much  more.
