Marple Newtown Students Allowed to Use Mobile Devices in School

Marple Newtown School District has revised their Electronic Communication Devices Policy to permit silent use for mobile devices during school hours but within specific parameters.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–Students of will now be allowed to use mobile devices within school walls during school hours with a silent use policy.

The school district describe silent use as "the use of Electronic Communication Devices, including Personal Electronic Communication Devices, that make no sound, are inaudible, and are speechless. Examples of Silent Use include texting, electronic messaging, and the use of headphones with the volume not being audible to others. No device ringing, ringtones, or sound effects are permitted at any time."

An electronic communication device has been described by the district as smartphones, such as iPhone, Blackberry, cellular phones, mobile phones PDAs, traditional telphones, media players, digital cameras, etc.

However, the school district will firmly restrict students from using communication devices in instructional areas, which may include classrooms, gymnasiums, auditoriums, field trips, board rooms, and more.

Parents must sign a form provided by the school district to allow their student to use electronic communication devices during school hours. Rules and regulations may differ from each school level (elementary to middle school level and middle school to high school level).
