School Officials Review Bullying/Cyberbullying Policy

The first reading of revisions made to Marple Newtown School District's Bullying/Cyberbullying Policy passed, 7-1, at a meeting on March 27.

NEWTOWN SQUARE– officials passed the revisions made to the first reading of the district's Bullying/Cyberbullying Policy at last week's school board meeting, 7-1. School Board member Fred Dewey was absent from the meeting.

School Board member Rich Sokorai voted against the approval of the first reading of the revisions made to the policy and shared that the parameters made in the policy should increase even outside school grounds.

"I don't know if you can do this but I think–if we're restricting ourselves to only communications and bullying that occurs on school district property and under our supervision, if the law is and it's limited that way then I think that's fine," shared Sokorai.

He continued, "But if we're not so limited and we can expand that policy to cyberbullying that occurs outside of the school district but between our students–off-premises, off school district bullying–I don't know if we can or not legally...but I think we should consider that because that's probably more prevalent."

Sokorai stated he wished to see the Social Media Policy that the School Board passed earlier this year be combined with the Bullying/Cyberbullying Policy.

In addition, Sokorai noted that much of the bullying that occurs between students nowadays are on a social media platform such as Twitter or Facebook.
