Teachers and Educators Recognized for Excellence in District Schools

Ed Hine was chosen among six other nominations in the district to represent the Marple Newtown School District as a teacher of excellence in Delaware County.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–Six teachers in the were nominated from each of the six schools within the district as a "teacher of excellence."

According to the district, in a joint partnership between the Delaware County Intermediate Unit and the Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union, the Delaware County Excellence in Teaching Award was created in 2007 to "recognize outstanding and dedicated teachers in Delaware County."

"We are here this evening to honor very special educators, who are representing a world of excellence in Marple Newtown," addressed Superintendent Dr. Merle Horowitz to the public at a regular school board meeting March 22. "It would be impossible for myself or Dr. Constance Bompadre [assistant superintendent] to make a selection out of so many outstanding individuals representing their peers."

Horowitz said she has annually asked a panel of retired educators "to take a look at the six nominations and make a decision."

The six nominated teachers and educators of excellence within the district included Sandra Greenfield, teacher at , Kimberly Scheck, teacher at , Helene Duckett, reading specialist at , Beth Lake, teacher at , Ed Hine, technology teacher at , and Joanne Boulanger, reading specialist at .

This year's teacher of excellence to represent the district on the county level went to technology education teacher Ed Hine.

In the 2009-2010 school year, Hine was awarded by the Technology Education Association of Pennsylvania (TEAP) and the International Technology Education Association (ITEA) for being a Teacher of Excellence in technology. He was among the 34 teachers across the United States who were given the recognition by the ITEA and the only middle school teacher given the award in the 2009-2010 school year.

According to the TEAP, the Excellence Award is "one of the highest honors given to Technology and Engineering Education classroom teachers and is presented in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the profession and their students."
