Tigers Wrestling Team Heads Into Final Central League Matches Undefeated

The Marple Newtown High School Tigers wrestling team will head into their final week of Central Leagues matches starting Feb. 8 against Upper Darby and on Feb. 11 against Ridley.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–'s wrestling team will head into the final matches of the 2012 season undefeated in the Central League. This will be the second consecutive year the Tigers will battle for the League Championship, according to Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Dennis Reardon.

"Last year, the young Tigers lost in front of a packed house to league champion Garnet Valley in what was a thrilling contest. This year, it is our turn!" states Reardon on the school's website.

The Tigers, the team to beat, currently withholds a 16-0 record and is ranked the number one team in Delaware County. This week, the Tigers vie for the top spot in the league.

On Wednesday, Feb. 8, the Tigers will host Upper Darby High School starting with the junior varsity teams at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity matches at 7 p.m. Upper Darby will be a tough competitor for Marple Newtown as they also come into the final week of Central League matches undefeated.

Wednesday night will also mark Senior Night for Marple Newtown wrestlers who have achieved at the highest level. Those seniors include Aaron Moldoff, Tom Antista, Chris Kurkian, Ed Callaghan, Greg Pfeffinger, and Kenny Smith.

Hoping to grab a share of the league title, the Tigers will host their final match against Ridley High School on Saturday, Feb. 11. Only the varsity wrestlers will battle it out on the mat 7 p.m. against Ridley, the third place team in the Central League, before post-season competitions.

Reardon acknowledges what could be a historic season for the wrestling team:

"The Tigers are in the midst of a historic season.They have worked very hard and are on the cusp of achieving their goals. Now is time for the Marple Newtown School Community to rally in support of their efforts. Let’s see if we can’t pack our beautiful, and christen it the right way–with a league championship. It is time to show off our Tiger pride and give the team that extra support it may need in their quest for a League Title!"
