WHAT IS A FIRE POLICE OFFICER

What is a Fire Police Officer

A Fire Police Officer is part of strategic and tactical unit. They shall have full power to regulate traffic and keep crowds under control at or in the vicinity of any fire at which their companies are in attendance and to exercise such other police powers as are NECESSARY in order to facilitate and prevent interference with the work of firemen in extinguishing fires, and, in addition, shall have the police powers necessary to perform their duties when functioning as special fire police. The Fire Police also work closely with the Marple Township Police, (MTPD), when special call, during parades, fairs and other special events, function, or parade conducted by an organization other than a volunteer fire company.

They respond to the scene for all fire, rescue, and hazardous materials alarms. Their primary responsibility is to ensure a safe and unobstructed area for firefighters, rescue personnel and emergency vehicles, as well as providing spectator and crowd control. Their secondary assignment is to assist the general public by establishing detour routs and traffic control. With roads in our first response zone varying from divided highways to narrow local streets, this can be a challenging task.
