Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association's Golf Outing Swings Into Town For Third Year

The Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association in Newtown Square will raise money towards their memorial.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–On Friday, Sept. 9, the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association (DCVMA) will host their third annual Patriot Day Golf Outing at Edgemont Country Cub.

The event–the proceeds of which will go towards the on West Chester Pike/Route in Newtown Square–will feature an 18-hole golf tournament, a helicopter ball drop, a dinner, and a silent auction.

This year’s tournament will be held in memory of Tony Fizzano Sr.—the longtime DCVMA president who lost the battle to pancreatic cancer in November last year.

“We finally broke ground on our veterans memorial and it’s due to be completed in November of 2012, so we’re all very excited,” said event organizer Barbara Zippy, who added that this year’s golf outing should be their “biggest ever.”

Zippy said that the popular helicopter ball drop will also have a special guest this year—the mother of the first area man to die in the war in Afghanistan, Newtown Square’s James Fordyce, will drop the balls out of the helicopter.

“It’s going to be a moving moment,” said Zippy.

Tee time for the tournament is at 1 p.m., and Zippy said there are still several spots remaining. Tickets for the helicopter ball drop costs $20. The owner of the ball closest to the hole wins $2,000, second prize is airline tickets, and third takes a pair of golf clubs.
