As the Delaware County SPCA moves toward becoming a life-saving shelter by July of 2012, the Spay Day subsidized spay/neuter program is just one of many preventative programs it continues to put in place, along with low-cost public veterinary clinics, a pet food bank, regional vaccination and microchipping clinics and aggressive adoption specials.

The SPCA hosted Spay Days in February and July, as well.

Aside from the benefit of controlling the pet overpopulation, spaying and neutering can help your cat live a happier, healthier, longer life.

According to the American Humane Association, spaying eliminates the constant crying and nervous pacing of a female cat in heat. Neutering of male cats can prevent certain behaviors such as urine marking, aggression and the urge to roam. Additionally, spaying females prior to their first heat cycle nearly eliminates the risk of breast cancer and totally prevents uterine infections and uterine cancer. Neutering males prevents testicular cancer and enlargement of the prostate gland, and greatly reduces their risk for perianal tumors.

Rabies, Distemper and Leukemia vaccines will also be available at a special low-priced $10. Microchips and FeLV/FIV combo tests will be specially discounted at $25. Preventative services will be available at the regularly discounted price.
