Car Show, Autism-Friendly Movie Among Weekend Events [Get Out]

It's a busy week and weekend in and around Marple Newtown Patch. See what's going on.

There are lots of things happening this weekend. It's a weekend full of community events. Celebrate the French Revolution at Media's Bastille Day and 2nd Saturday Arts Stroll. But if a stroll isn't quite your pace and you're looking for fast, head out to Media's Car Show where you'll find hundreds of cars from around the Delaware Valley. Then there is a unique experience for families affected by autism or special needs at the AMC Marple 10 Movie Theater where you can watch Despicable Me 2 in a sensory friendly way.

Media's 6th Annual Downtown Car Show

  • When: Sunday, July 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Raindate: July 21
  • Where: Downtown Media Borough
  • Why Go: Hundreds of cars will be on display throughout State and Front streets. Car collectors and fans from all over Delaware County will enjoy the automobiles ranging from antiques to muscle cars to hot rods.
  • Cost: Free
Sensory Friendly Films
  • When: Saturday, July 13 at 10 a.m.
  • Where: AMC Marple 10, 400 South State Road in Springfield
  • Why Go: This unique opportunity for families affected by autism and other disabilities offers much more than a movie. Watch Despicable Me 2 in the movie theater with the lights up, the sound turned down and audience members are invited to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing. Guests are welcome to bring their own gluten-free or special snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie.Check here for more upcoming screenings in August
Duathlon Race Series 
  • When: Starts Tuesday, July 9 through Aug. 13
  • Where: Inner Drive Fitness, 210 S Newtown Street Rd in Newtown Square
  • Why Go: This weekly duathlon race series consists of a 1.2 mile outdoor run, 10 miles on an indoor cycling bike, and a second 1.2 mile outdoor run. It's an informal race with weekly prizes and end of series awards.
Media Borough's 7th Annual Bastille Day Celebration
  • When: Saturday, July 13 at 6 p.m.
  • Where: State Street and Veterans Square in Media
  • Why Go: State Street will be closed to traffic and transformed into an arts-filled scene from history, featuring a reenactment of the storming of the Bastille. The largest Eiffel Tower in PA will also be presented by creator Bok Reed, a local woodworker and Penncrest physics teacher, who constructed the tower. The 25-foot cedar, tower will be on display to take pictures, so you can show your friends your trip to "Paris" this summer.

2nd Saturday Arts Stroll

  • When: Saturday, July 13 at 6 p.m.
  • Where: Downtown Media
  • Why Go: Continue the Bastille Celebration even after the French Revolution at this month's 2nd Saturday Arts Stroll. Artists will display and sell their work at the "Village Des Artistes" and street musicians will also play in the Village. The VooDudes will perform live at State and Olive streets at 8:30 p.m. and dancing will continue into the night. 
  • Cost: Free
Sports Memorabilia Appraisal
  • When: Saturday, July 13 at noon
  • Where: Mickey Vernon Museum at Granite Run Mall, 1067 West Baltimore Pike, Media
  • Why Go: If you think you have an item or collection that has value, bring it to the sports museum and get a free estimate to find out what it's worth.
  • Cost: Free
Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley Jr.
  • When: July 10, 11, 12 at 10:30 a.m. and July 11 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Where: Upper Darby Performing Arts Center, 601 N. Lansdowne Avenue in Drexel Hill
  • Why Go: Follow Flat Stanley's adventures and enjoy this kid-friendly (ages 4 and up) musical. 70 minutes, no intermission. Come early for pre-show activities and stay after the show to meet cast members. Free babysitting also available for those too young to enjoy the show quietly. 
  • Cost: Tickets: $6 to $9
