Chinese New Year, Souper Bowl Among Weekend Events [Get Out]

It's a busy week and weekend in and around Marple Newtown Patch. See what's going on.

There are lots of events happenings this weekend. It's a weekend full of community events. Ring in the Year of the Horse this Chinese New Year. Donate food on the Souper Bowl. Taste some wine and chocolate or view some fine art.

Girl Scout Cookie Sales

  • When/Where: Saturday, Feb. 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at ACME in Newtown Square Shopping Center and Sunday, Feb. 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Panera Bread in Newtown Square Shopping Center
  • Why Go: St. Anastasia's 3rd Grade Brownie Troop #51095 will be selling Girl Scout cookies so go and get your fix. 
  • Cost: $4 a box

Chinese New Year Celebration

  • When: Saturday, Feb. 1 at 11:30 a.m.
  • Where: State Street in Media, Parade starts and ends at Margaret Kuo's
  • Why Go: Celebrate the "Year of the Horse" with Philadelphia's premiere "Lion Dancers" Hung Gar Kung Fu Academy as the parade, drums and music span State Street. The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival (marking the end of winter and welcoming the spring), is the most important social and economic holiday in China, according to History.com.
  • Cost: Free

Scary Stories on a Winter Night

  • When: Saturday, Feb. 1 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
  • Where: 3 Rose Valley Road, Media (near the Manchester/Rose Valley Rd/Ridley Creek intersection) 
  • Why Go: This spine tingling house concert, not suitable for children, will hopefully warm you up on a bleak winters night. More details here
  • Cost: $15 in advance, $18 at the door
Delco Souper Bowl Food Collection
  • When: Saturday, Feb. 1 at 9 a.m.
  • Where: Springfield, Rutledge, Morton and Westbrook Park
  • Why Go: Bring canned goods and other non-perishable food items to three locations: St. Matthew's Lutheran Church (Bennett and Lynbrooke Rds.), St. Francis of Assisi Church (Saxer Ave.) and Princeton Presbyterian (Baltimore Pike). For more information call Donald Cadge 610-742-1081.
Wine and Chocolate Pairing
  • When: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in February
  • Where: Penns Wood Winery, 124 Beaver Valley Road, Chadds Ford
  • Why Go: February is the month of wine, chocolate, romance and fun. Taste five Reserve wines paired with local chocolates and chocolate desserts.
  • Cost: $22 per person in advance. Reservation required. 
Fine Art Show and Sale
  • When: Feb. 1 through 7, from noon to 4 p.m., daily
  • Where: Academy of Notre Dame, 560 Sproul Road, Villanova
  • Why Go: The exhibition features nearly 100 artists’ works in a variety of mediums including oils, watercolors, acrylics, sculptures, ceramics, 
    and glass. This year’s Featured Artist is Susan O’Reilly.
  • Cost: Free
