CHESTER–Dennis O’Shea, of Newtown Square, a grounds foreman at Widener University, was awarded the William David Eckard Jr. Award for Distinguished Service in recognition of his hard work and longtime commitment to the university. The Eckard Award was established by William David Eckard III, longtime vice president of administration and finance at Widener University and a 1966 graduate of Pennsylvania Military College. He created the award, a $3,000 cash grant, in memory of his father to help promote and reward excellence at Widener. Recipients must work for Widener on a full-time basis for at least ten years and consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of service. WEST CHESTER–Rustin High School swim coach and former Marple Newtown High School swimmer Kenneth Fuller was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting an underage student on May16, according to the Chester County District Attorney's Office. PHILADELPHIA–Jennifer Dailey, of Broomall, was on the big screen during Marple Newtown High School's 2008 graduation. Dailey was studying abroad in Switzerland at the time as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. Four years later, she found herself on the big screen once more. This time, however, she was on the podium at the University of Pennsylvania making her commencement speech. On May 13, Dailey, who was nominated by the school's Physics Department, spoke in front of her peers as the featured student speaker for the university's College of Arts & Sciences. The Pennsylvania Independent recently published the top districts in the state with the highest amount of reserve funds, in which Marple Newtown School District ranked 175 in the state according to data from the state Department of Education.
The Marple Newtown School District had $6 million in reserve funds last year, ranking 175 out of the 500 school districts in the state with the highest reserve funds. On June 30 of last year, the state had $3.2 billion total reserve funds in school districts, according to an article in the Pennsylvania Independent. Districts with the most in reserve funds are Pittsburgh ($148 million), Downingtown ($50 million), Abington ($45 million), Lower Merion ($43 million), and Altoona ($37 million). Gov. Tom Corbett's administration is encouraging districts with large reserve funds "to dip into those accounts to cover operating expenses in a year when state education funding is increasing, but not as much as districts would like," according to the …

MEDIA—Classes for students wishing to learn English or improve their understanding and fluency of the English language will be offered from mid-May and continue through early August at the Delaware County Community College’s Marple Campus (901 S. MEDIA–Delaware County Community College recently announced registration is open for students who are looking to receive their GED. Summer courses are available to to help students prepare for the test leading to the Pennsylvania High School Equivalency Diploma. According to the school, this 30-hour course covers all test areas: reading writing, English, math, natural science and social studies.
