Newsweek Ranks Marple Newtown Among US High Schools

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.

On mobile? You can see interactive map here.   Newsweek has ranked Marple Newtown High School as the #1096 high school in the country. In Pennsylvania, Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Philadelphia received the highest ranking of #56. Locally, Conestoga High School in Berwyn was ranked #124, Harriton High School #219, Radnor High School #255, Strath Haven High School #291, Lower Merion High School #321, Penncrest #549, Springfield High School #648, and Haverford High School #742. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. Area Students Win Theater Honors

Student critics throughout the region honor the best of high school theater at the Cappies.

After a walk down the red carpet it was on to honors inside for high school performers from the local area Sunday at the 2013 Cappies Awards. The annual awards honor student actors, technicians, musicians, design and theater critics in the greater Philadelphia region. Thirty-seven public and private schools in the city and surrounding counties are nominated and awarded by student theater critics. The critics themselves are also among the award nominees and winners presented with trophies. Before the show at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center at Upper Darby High School, nominees walked the red carpet in formal wear and in some cases in costume from shows and musicals presented during the current school year. Community College To Be 100% Tobacco-Free

Delaware County Community College will implement a new tobacco-free policy starting July 1, 2013.

Students and staff at Delaware County Community College will be able to breathe easy starting this summer. The college will implement a new tobacco-free policy starting July 1.  The policy will help "create a healthy and sustainable environment for the entire College community by becoming 100 percent tobacco free," according to the school's policy. According to the school, the use of tobacco products (including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes and any other tobacco products) will be prohibited from the following locations: For more information about the policy, visit DCCC's website here.

Marple Newtown High Scores Well in Reading Proficiency

See how Marple Newtown fared in the U.S. News and World Report’s list of 2013’s Best High Schools.

U.S. News and World Report recently released its 2013 Best High Schools list. Several Philadelphia-area high schools—including Conestoga High School in Berwyn, Radnor High School in Radnor, Lower Merion High School in Lower Merion and Great Valley High School in Malvern—made the list. Marple Newtown High School did not rank within the "Best Of" list but did score well in the report's proficient in reading. U.S. News and World Report looked at more than 21,000 public schools across the country, according to its website, and more than 150 schools from Pennsylvania made the list. It is not the exception! The school is judged based on the scores of all its students. If you were to look solely at the scores of those in the music program, especially the kids who read music, they would be significantly higher (on average) then the rest of the student body! If we could take the average scores of those students and send them to U.S. News...you would see just how much of a …   more ›
