Lower Delco Wildcats Head To National Jr. Olympics

This will be the third consecutive year the Lower Delco Lady Wildcats Head to the National Junior Olympics.

This will be the third year in a row that the Lower Delco Lady Wildcats are going to the National Junior Olympics. This year, the sixth-grade team came in second place in the region, making them eligible for Nationals in July, in Franklin, TN. Team members include Allison Tomasetti, Catherine Esbenshade ,Maria Koblish, Maddy Sorokanych, Halle Robinson, Katie Detwiler, Kate Masciantonio, Sam MacDonald, Megan Ricker, Nicole Barnes, and Molly Masciantonio. Many members from this team have played together for the last three years, with a few wonderful new additions.

MN Tigers Receive $500 From Broomall Rotary

The Broomall Rotary recently presented the Marple Newtown High School football team with a $500 check.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–Marple Newtown High School recently received a $500 grant through the Broomall Rotary for Hudl, a web-based, interactive video editing system for sports team use. Both the football and lacrosse teams are currently utilizing Hudl. "We are very grateful for the continued support of the Broomall Rotary. Hudl will allow our players easy access so that they can create highlights to aid in their college recruitment," said Coach Ray Gionta.

Part 3: MNSD Community Budget Committee's Activity Fees Recommendations

Several recommendations were presented to the Marple Newtown School Board at Tuesday's Budget & Finance Committee meeting by the appointed Community Budget Committee.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–In part three of the five-part series of recommendations to the budget made by the Marple Newtown School Board appointed seven-member Community Budget Committee, is recommendations on activity fees for the district. The committee was formed in September and has been meeting monthly since then to review the district's budget and to analyze revenues and costs of district operations. Committee member Jim Lanzalotto urged the school board to communicate more openly with the public about the limitations they are faced with in the budget due to state mandates. Opportunities to reduce costs and for potential revenue growth in the budget were discussed in five areas: Transportation, Facility Usage, Activity Fees, Advertising & …

NYTimes: NBA Ref, St. Pius X Alum Joe Crawford Talks About 35 Years On The Court

The New York Times recently featured local sports celebrity Joe Crawford, of Newtown Square, on his years as a well-known NBA referee.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–The New York Times recently featured local sports celebrity Joe Crawford for his years on the basketball court for the NBA. This year Crawford, whose notable connections to the Marple Newtown area include being a Newtown Square resident and a St. Pius X School alumni, marks his 35th year with the NBA. Crawford made an appearance at his old stomping grounds of St. Pius X last August for the school's annual basketball camp. Crawford talked to the young athletes about growing up, life with the NBA and the lockout. Crawford has officiated in the NBA since 1977, during which time he's worked more playoff games than any active referee, called every finals between 1986 and 2006, and never missed a day of work. Local Results For Broad Street Run

See how local runners in the Marple Newtown area did on Sunday's Broad Street Run in Philadelphia.

On Sunday morning, more than 40,000 runners near and far participated in the 33rd Annual Broad Street Run in Philadelphia. According to Philly.com, Henry Rutto, 29, of Kenya, won the 10-mile run for the men's division, clocking in at 47 minutes and 6 seconds, while Esther Erb, 26, of North Carolina, won the women's division with 55 minutes and 28 seconds. Among those who participated, 246 runners represented the Marple Newtown area–118 from Broomall and 128 from Newtown Square. Tigers' Running Back To Play in All Star East-West Game

Cimirrow Moat, of Marple Newtown High School, will be among the group of top high school football players playing in this year's Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association's East-West All Star Game on Sunday, May 6, in Monroeville.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–Marple Newtown High School's star running back Cimirrow Moat is one of the players chosen to play in the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association's (PSFCA) East-West All Star Game on Sunday in Monroeville, PA. The game will begin at 2 p.m. at Gateway High School in Monroeville, just outside of Pittsburgh. PSFCA East-West All Star Game was conceived giving the honor to play in a statewide, prestigious all star game to 68 more players, according to EasternPAFootball.com. Each year since 2001, the East-West All Star game had been an annual occurrence until 2011 when it was derailed by sponsorship and other issues, reports Philly.com. Run Time: Local 5Ks and Other Races In May

Looking for a 5K, 10K, or half-marathon?

Looking for a local run this May? There are two runs scheduled at Ridley Creek State Park this month–one for the Delaware County Suicide Prevention & Awareness Task Force 5K Run & Walk on May 5 at Picnic Area #17. Registration is $25 (children under 12 is free), includes free T-shirt, snack, beverage, and raffles/prizes. Medals will be awarded for various age groups. On-site registration will be $30. The event will be rain or shine. The other race is on May 12, a 5K Run & Walk for Brain Cancer Awareness in honor of Sean Curry who lost his battle with brain cancer at the age of 39. St. Pius Girls Take 1st Place Trophy at Penn Relays

The senior girls CYO 4x100 relay team recently took home first place in the Penn Relays.

BROOMALL–The senior girls of the CYO 4x100 relay team at St. Pius X School came in first place in the championship race of the Philadelphia Archdiocese at the Penn Relays this year. The members of the relay team include Julia Lemme, Gina Amoroso, Colleen Kearney and Caitlyn Clark. This marks the first time that a senior girls team from St. Pius has ever brought home the coveted University of Pennsylvania Championship plaque. In addition, last Friday, the junior boys (Owen Hinkley, Lucas McGrann, Jimmy Yocum and Chris Kirby) placed fourth, while the senior boys (Sean Noonan, David Bowdler, John Osborne and Luke Civardelli) placed fifth.

A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them."
