Newtown Rings In New Year With Reduced Tax Increase From 2011 Prelim Budget

Newtown Township passed its 2011 budget with a 9 percent tax increase, a 0.5 percent decrease from its initial 9.5 percent.

Newtown Square–Down 0.5 percent from its initially proposed 9.5 percent, Newtown Supervisors passed its 2011 budget–just hours to spare before deadline–with a 9 percent tax increase at a special re-convened budget meeting Dec. 31. With the new 9 percent tax increase number, the average homeowner in Newtown Square–assessed at $256,940–will look to pay $51.75 more per year in municipal taxes. At the proposed 9.5 percent, the average homeowner would have paid $54.62 more per year. In other words, Jim Sheldrake, township manager, said the average homeowner is looking to pay approximately $1 per week or $0.14 per day with the 9 percent tax hike. DelCo Council Approves 2011 Budget

No tax increases for the $315,984,000 budget.

Media–The Delaware County Council approved the 2011 operating budget Dec. 14 without tax increases. On Tuesday night's meeting, the council approved the $315,984,000 budget; something that Council Chairman John Whelan (R-Ridley) said was "no small task" to the packed meeting room. Some of the motivations for ensuring that the new budget did not include tax increases were the fact that some people have lost jobs, employers were not handing out pay raises or Christmas bonuses this year, Whelan said. The following will remain the same for 2011: The council did not receive a reply when asked for public comments regarding the budget. Attached is the budget.
