Supervisors Approve 2013 Budget With 2.9% Tax Hike

The 2013 budget calls for a 2.9 percent tax increase for Newtown Township residents.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–The Newtown Township Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the 2013 budget at a special supervisors’ meeting on Thursday.  The budget includes a 2.9 percent tax increase, which is down from the original 4.5 percent increase that was proposed in the preliminary 2013 budget. The millage rate will be raised to 2.73 from the current rate of 2.664.  The average homeowner in Newtown Township, based on an average home assessed at $250,000, will pay $20 more in township taxes in 2013. This would bring the average homeowner’s real estate taxes to $685 per year, up from $665 per year. Marple Passes 2013 Budget With 0% Tax Levy

Marple Township Board of Commissioners approved a zero percent increase in real estate taxes for residents next year.

BROOMALL–The Marple Township Board of Commissioners passed the 2013 municipal budget that will not raise real estate taxes over the current 2012 rates for the average homeowner at a special budget meeting on Thursday morning. Last month, Finance Director Ed O'Lone presented the commissioners with a proposed preliminary tax increase of 7.2 percent. Thursday morning's budget meeting started off with a proposed real estate tax increase of 2.7 percent, which was then brought down to a 0 percent after further discussion by the board. For the average homeowner in Marple–with a home assessed at an approximate median value of $161,000–the millage rate would stay the same as 2012's rate of $4.18 per thousand dollars. I recycle almost excessively but see many of my neighbors don't recycle at all. Is there an incentive program you could consider implementing? In Thornbury Township in Delaware County, they have a scanning system that eventually issues its residents a reward in lieu of gift cards to Wawa, Starbucks, etc. It's based on weight. Commissioners Delay Vote on Budget, Tax Rate

The Marple Township Board of Commissioners are scheduled to pass the 2013 budget on Dec. 20 at 8:30 a.m.

BROOMALL–The Marple Township Board of Commissioners tabled votes concerning budget appropriations, the real estate tax rate and the fee schedule for 2013 at a commissioners meeting on Monday night. Fifth Ward Commissioner John Longacre said Joe Rufo, 1st ward commissioner, did a lot of research on all of the budget line items and "nobody felt comfortable passing a budget tonight." The commissioners had been scheduled to vote on budget appropriations for 2013, the real estate tax millage rate for 2013, and the 2013 fee schedule on Monday night, but all three items were tabled unanimously with 7-0 votes. Supervisors Project 4.5% Tax Increase For 2013

Newtown Township's 2013 preliminary budget was presented at a budget meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 5.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–The Newtown Township Board of Supervisors approved, 3-0, the advertisement of the 2013 preliminary budget at a budget meeting on Wednesday night. Supervisor Vice Chairman Dr. Ross Lambert and Supervisor George Wood were absent from the meeting.  The 2013 preliminary budget calls for a 4.5 percent tax increase. The township's current millage rate is 2.664 and will increase to 2.831 in the preliminary budget. For the average homeowner in Newtown Township–with an average home approximately assessed at $250,000–they will look to pay $42 more in township taxes next year, if the budget is approved. 2013 Marple Prelim Budget Projects 7% Tax Increase

The 2013 preliminary budget was presented at the Marple Township Commissioners meeting on Nov. 13.

BROOMALL–Marple Township Finance Director Ed O'Lone presented the 2013 preliminary budget at the Board of Commissioners on Tuesday evening. According to O'Lone, the budget is split into four separate funds–Sewer Fund, Paxon Hollow Golf Course Fund, Refuse Fund, and General Fund.  "This marks my 11th year compiling the annual budget here in Marple Township," said O'Lone. "It seems that every year the challenges to balance this budget gets more complicated with all the economic uncertainty." Not to argue with everyone, but. . . The average homeowner (I know, average) will pay an additional $50/year. That's $4/mo. Are times in Marple really THAT hard? I know some on SS won't get increases. I know some are without jobs. But $4/mo to keep our township up? That seems silly. So let's discuss and not argue or start throwing stones. Marple Department Heads Make Their Cases For 2013 Budget

The Marple Township Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday morning to further discuss the 2013 budget.

BROOMALL–A few department heads from Marple Township made their case Tuesday morning before the Board of Commissioners as to why they asked for the amount they did in the 2013 general fund budget. Last week, the township projected a 7.2 percent tax increase. The general fund will fall short by about $1.1 million, according to officials. Based off of real estate taxes, the tax increase, trash pickup, the Paxon Hollow golf rates and sewer fees have a projected revenue of about $15.3 million. The township expects to spend about $16.3 million. In addition, various departments showed up on Tuesday to justify their budget requests.
