Marple Newtown's Firecracker 5K 2012 Race Results

There were 414 runners who competed in the third annual Fourth of July Firecracker 5K in Broomall.

BROOMALL–Despite the heat, more than 400 runners came out to the Marple Newtown Firecracker 5K on July 4th. The third annual race led the annual Marple Newtown Fourth of July Parade.  The race brought out runners of all ages. Read below to find out who placed in the top three for each category. Hundreds Come Out For Marple Newtown's 4th of July Parade and 5K

BROOMALL–The blazing sun may not have stopped for Marple Newtown's annual Fourth of July Parade and Firecracker 5K, but traffic certainly did after a large portion of the westbound lanes on West Chester Pike/Rt. 3 were shutdown for Wednesday morning's festivities.  While many people were sleeping in on their day off, 494 runners and a crowd of spectators, turned out for the Third Annual Firecracker 5K. The record-setting amount of participants took off around 9:30 a.m., and runners of all ages crossed the finish line over the next hour.  James Belfatto, 16, won the 3.1-mile race with a time of 16:54 and 29-year-old Aaron Skolnik finished second in 17:03.  The parade followed the 5K and never lulled with around 90 minutes of lively …

Police, PennDOT to Target Drunken Drivers

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative is set to run through July 8.

The following information comes from a release from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. State and local police, along with PennDOT, will take part in a national enforcement effort through July 8 targeting motorists who drive under the influence. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement effort will focus on keeping Pennsylvania’s roads safe during the Independence Day travel period. “Many people will celebrate and travel for the Independence Day holiday,” PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said in a release. “Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs puts your life and the lives of those around you in danger.” “Motorists must understand that alcohol and driving never mix,” said State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan …

Can I Buy Fireworks in Marple Newtown?

If you have any questions about buying fireworks, the State Police might have the answer.

The following information comes courtesy of the State Police-Media barracks. Due to the upcoming July 4th holiday and summer season, here are some FAQs regarding fireworks. Q: Can I use fireworks in Pennsylvania? A: State law prohibits the use of Consumer and Display Fireworks in Pennsylvania without a permit. Items defined as “ground and hand-held sparkling devices”, “novelties” and “toy caps” in American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) Standard 87-1 are not currently regulated by State Law; therefore, their sale and use are permissible. These “non-fireworks” are the only types allowed to be sold from tents, stands, convenience stores, retail establishments and other various outlets not licensed by the Department of Agriculture.
