NEWTOWN SQUARE–This Saturday, June 16, the Billy Keane Foundation will hold their 3rd Annual Billy Keane 5K and a 1 mile family run to help assist families in Delaware County who are facing difficult times due to an illness or tragedy. According to the foundation, Billy Keane was a "friend, brother, and fiancé." In June 2009, he passed on to a better place after a 16 month battle with colorectal cancer. Billy was one of the most generous people we knew. If there was a cause being represented, you could always count on Billy to make a large donation! The Foundation plans to hold a fundraising event a year and shortly, thereafter, will choose candidates to receive a onetime financial gift to help with their immediate needs, according to the …

Hundreds turned out for the annual run and walk benefiting children of fallen first responders.
Nearly 300 runners and walkers turned out for the 2011 Run for Heroes 5K in Springfield on a sunny Sunday morning. Police and other first responders from Springfield, Marple, Nether Providence and many other Delaware County municipalities directed participants at intersections along the route. Runners were rewarded with coffee and donuts at the finish line, plus cool water pouring out of an Aqua truck. The annual race, now in its 11th year, has raised about a quarter of a million dollars for the Delaware County Hero Scholarship Fund, which benefits the children of emergency responders who die in the line of duty. An estimated 250 participants and a number of onlookers and volunteers gathered at Ridley Creek State Park on May 7 to support the cause of suicide prevention and awareness.
NEWTOWN SQUARE–The Delaware County Suicide Prevention and Awareness Task Force, in conjunction with Run the Day (a race management company that handles hundreds of races in the Philadelphia area), hosted another successful outing on a beautiful Saturday to remind people of the very real public health issue of suicide. It was the organization's sixth annual run/walk event, the last five of which have been at Ridley Creek State Park. Nineteen companies sponsored the event, including a large amount of food and drinks donated by Dunkin Donuts, Giant, Mary Mullholland, WalMart and Wawa, and the Task Force themselves generously brought over 30 boxes of pizza.
