Marple Newtown Suffers a Tough Loss to Lower Merion

Although the Tigers lose to the Aces in Tuesday's lacrosse game 8-4, Marple Newtown has a solid goalie to build around in Ian Callahan.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–Dave Jones knows it’s going to be a process in getting the Marple Newtown boys’ lacrosse team to reach respectability. The program has undergone a number of changes and many different coaches in recent years, and Jones would like to add some stability. What he’s found first, it seems, is a goalie. Sophomore Ian Callahan has been a shining light in what has been a trying season. If not for the 5-foot-7-inch sophomore, the Tigers may have been devoured by far worse scores than they have lost by on May 3. On Tuesday, after the Tigers struck out to a 1-0 lead, Lower Merion put a torrent of pressure on Marple Newtown to turn around the course of the game. But the Tigers couldn’t keep Lower Merion away all night, eventually losing…

Marple Newtown Lacrosse Loses to Aggressive Springfield Team

The Cougars' physically punishing defense and speedy offense ended in an 11-1 rout for the TIgers.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–The sun was still blindingly bright at the onset of Tuesday night's lacrosse game between Marple Newtown and Springfield, but it turned out to be a dark patch for the Tigers' season. "Springfield-Delco is a good team and we knew that going into the game," said David Jones, who is in his first year as head coach. "I admire that the coaches over there consistently develop disciplined teams year after year. Tonight was just not our night and we made a number of mental errors." The scoring started for Springfield just 90 seconds into the game, and before five minutes had been played, the Tigers found themselves down 3-0. Springfield's attackers charged through the orange and black time and again, and Marple Newtown had …

Tigers Win Two Straight For First Time In Two Years

The Marple Newtown boys lacrosse team beat Harriton 14-2 Tuesday night.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–Davey Jones is trying to build something at Marple Newtown. The Tigers’ boys lacrosse coach is deceiving. He’s 23 and, although he still looks like he’s in high school, he deals with his players in an exuberant, balanced manner, building their confidence and trying to create something at Marple Newtown. And it’s starting to show. The Tigers beat Harriton, 14-2, on a raw, rainy Tuesday night to drive their record to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the Central League, while Harriton fell to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the league. This victory meant a little something for Marple Newtown. It’s the first time the Tigers won two consecutive games since 2009, and the three victories mark the first time Marple Newtown has won three games in a …
