Construction and repairs of the Gradyville Road bridge in Newtown Square, which were expected to be finished in a year or less, have been delayed. Construction should now be completed and the bridge reopened by mid-February, 2014, according to the Newtown Township website. Previously, township officials had stated an anticipation date and a "best-case scenario" date of approximately one year from the announcement of when the bridge was deemed dangerous and closed to the public. Last summer, township officials anticipated the repairs would be completed and the bridge reopened by February 2013. Hurricane Sandy has delayed the reopening of St. David's Road bridge in Newtown Square.
NEWTOWN SQUARE–It's already been nearly four months since construction to rehabilitate St. David's Road bridge began. An earlier predicted timeline had the bridge set to reopen in November but after Hurricane Sandy, the bridge may reopen at a later date. According to Brad Rudolph, a safety press officer for the Pennyslvania Department of Transportation, told Marple Newtown Patch that necessary precautions were taken before Sandy's arrival. "Before the storm hit, crews took the necessary precautions by removing scaffolding and other equipment at the construction site," said Rudolph. Newtown officials announced the construction completion of the bridge may be more likely in May.
NEWTOWN SQUARE–The last of the two properties that need construction easements during construction of the Gradyville Road bridge project has officially signed their agreement for execution, announced Newtown Township Engineer Eileen Nelson at a supervisors meeting on Sept. 10. The one property had signed their agreement by last month's meeting. The easements will be for the duration of the project only. The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the acceptance of the temporary construction easement at Monday night's supervisors meeting. NEWTOWN SQUARE–Construction begins on Monday, July 16, to rehabilitate St. David's Road bridge. In a previous press release sent by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the rehabilitation project of the 202-year-old bridge was scheduled to reopen in November 2013. However, according to Gene Blaum assistant press secretary of PennDOT, the year was mistakenly written as 2013 and not 2012. PennDOT's roadwork to renovate the bridge located on State Road (Route 1) at Rolling Road started May 21 and continues to cause delays on a major thoroughfare to Philadelphia.
