The Phillies pitcher and his wife, Newtown Square residents, debuted the Bryn Mawr office of their charitable foundation Friday night.
Bitingly cold, Friday night was no time to loiter on a sidewalk. But pedestrians at Lancaster and Merion avenues in Bryn Mawr, one after another, couldn't help themselves. There, conducting press interviews behind a storefront window, stood one of the most recognizable couples in the Delaware Valley: Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels and his wife, Heidi Hamels, founders of the Hamels Foundation charity. The Hamelses were throwing a private party at 880 W. Lancaster Ave. to celebrate the opening of the foundation's new office and retail shop, formerly located in Center City. Beginning Monday, fans can browse and purchase merchandise between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. Proceeds benefit the five-year-old foundation and its education projects—…

Here are five ways to get a little British in honor of the Queen.
Queen Elizabeth II was only 25 when she became the head of state of a faltering post-war power. Today, at 86, she remains a symbol of spirit and stamina for Britain and is the oldest person to reign over the country. Only Queen Victoria, who took the throne at an earlier age, enjoyed a longer reign. Here are five ways you can celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's 60th year on the throne, an event called the Diamond Jubilee.

Thaddeus Bartkowski III opens up to Patch about the billboard controversy and the looming decision that the Haverford Zoning Hearing Board will make on Thursday, Feb. 16.
Thaddeus Bartkowski III, owner of Bartkowski Investment Group, Inc.’s (BIG), shares his views with Patch as several townships–including Marple and Newtown–decide the fate of the billboard controversy. The Haverford Township Zoning Hearing Board will decide on the issue at 7 p.m. at Thursday's meeting. The locations of the seven billboards that BIG proposes in Marple Township include locations on the 2300 block of West Chester Pike, 2500 block of West Chester Pike, 2600 block of West Chester Pike, 2500 block of Summit Avenue and 1900 and two on the 2100 block of Sproul Road. Marple argues its amended sign ordinance–amended on Jan. 5, 2009–was filed valid to this case denying BIG's proposed seven billboards in the township along West …

The deli is expected to open in early February, the owner said.
BROOMALL–Mrs. Marty's Deli, a Broomall staple, is opening its third location in Bryn Mawr, likely the first weekend in February, said owner Marty Godfrey. "I'm very excited, and I've been inundated—very nicely—by all the lovely people in the area wishing me well and wanting to know when I could open for eight or nine months," Godfrey said. Mrs. Marty's Deli opened in Broomall in 1984 and now has a second location in Media. Godfrey and co-owner Scott Finkelstein chose the 22 N. Bryn Mawr Ave. location (next to the UPS Store) because there's no other deli in the area and because a frequent customer of the Broomall location owns the building and convinced Godfrey to bring the shop there, he said. The Bryn Mawr deli will offer the same Jewish …

Patch food writer Clara Park reviews Tiffin in Bryn Mawr.
BRYN MAWR–I used to think Indian food was one of those love it-or-hate it cuisines until very recently. My orders typically consist of protein and vegetable dishes with wonderfully rich sauces, spices and flavor combinations that showcase the diversity of Indian cuisine, but I realized that Indian food can also be plain and mild. Armed with this newfound realization, I took an Indian food newbie to Tiffin in Bryn Mawr for her first Indian food experience. I was positive I would be able to provide her with a great meal regardless of whatever dining hang-ups she may have had. Fortunately for me, she was game for anything. We started off with aloo papri chaat and vegetable samosas. The crisp flour dumplings filled with potatoes and peas were …

An open house was held at the Franklin Avenue home Dec. 2.
BRYN MAWR–When Chris and Sandy Ross—who met at Gettysburg College before living in New York, New Jersey and Oregon—decided they wanted an environmentally friendly home, a piece of land in Bryn Mawr presented itself. A property on the first block of Franklin Avenue in Bryn Mawr seemed to provide good opportunities for natural light, and at 2,400 square feet, it would be a fairly small home. “Less is more,” said Philadelphia-based architect Anthony Miksitz. “I try to get clients to work smaller… If you build a 6,000-sq. ft. house and call it ‘green,’ it’s not green.” The previous property owner had torn down a home there with the intention of rebuilding but never did. The new owners also had the challenge of working around a large Japanese …
