Delaware County Council Chairman Tom McGarrigle presented the 2013 State of the County address at a Delaware County Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Towne House Restaurant in Media on April 9. McGarrigle highlighted economic success stories and presented an update on the Local Economic Development (LED) strategy for the future. McGarrigle listed many economic "silver linings" in Delaware County including redevelopment of the refineries, new retail stores in Upper Darby, the Quarry Development in Haverford, new hotels coming to Springfield, Tinicum and Ridley, and the U.S. Open coming to Merion Golf Club in Haverford. MEDIA–PennDOT (Pennsylvania Department of Transportation), police and Delaware County officials kicked off regional impaired and aggressive-driving enforcement at the Delaware County Courthouse in Media last week as part of “Operation Safe Holiday,” a campaign encouraging safe driving through the holiday season. Police discussed the use of sobriety checkpoints, roving patrols and regular traffic safety patrols to crack down on motorists who are driving aggressively or driving while impaired. MEDIA–Delaware County Council approved a long-term plan for animal control with the Chester County SPCA. Delaware County Council approved an animal control agreement between the Animal Protection Board and the Chester County SPCA last week, according to the Delaware County Daily Times. Council approved the proposal that was presented in August, which would run from Jan. 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2017, in which the Animal Protection Board would commit to $1,293,750 in payments to the Chester County SPCA over the life of the contract. The original six-month contract was extended an additional six months. UPPER PROVIDENCE–Delaware County residents are invited to the 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at Rose Tree Park in Upper Providence at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Elected officials, clergy, firefighters, law enforcement and emergency medical personnel will attend and speak at the ceremony. The ceremony, hosted by District Attorney Jack Whelan and Delaware County Council, will take place at the Delaware County Law Enforcement and Fire/EMS Memorial in the park. A wreath will be placed at the 9/11 Memorial in honor of those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
