Witnesses Prevent Drunken Driver Crash, Police Say

Witnesses watched as a car drifted into the opposing lane of traffic, just missing several other vehicles, several times, police say.

The following information was supplied by Newtown Township Police. Any arrests or charges mentioned do not indicate guilt or conviction.   Witnesses assisted in stopping a drunken driver from driving recklessly in Newtown Township, police said. On April 27, at about 7:47 p.m. police were dispatched to the area of S. Newtown Street Road for a report of a reckless and possibly intoxicated driver, according to the report. Witnesses reported that a black Toyota was northbound, traveling in the opposing lane of traffic and almost caused several head on collisions. More witnesses reported that the Toyota was now stopped on S. Newtown Street Road at West Chester Pike and several bystanders had the Toyota blocked in, according to the report. …

Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered to .05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. Internationally, only a handful of countries, including Canada, the United States and England, have a BAC limit of .08 while most of the …

Driver Found Sleeping After Hitting Pole, Police Say

Police charge the driver with driving under the influence of alcohol.

A Delaware County man is facing charges after police said he hit a utility pole on the 300 block of Madison Road in Springfield Township and didn’t stop. Ptlm. Stephen Hurwitz arrived on the scene and found the striking vehicle in the 100 block of Sherman Road, according to the police report. The vehicle, which had heavy front end damage, was idling and the operator appeared to be sleeping, police said. The 25-year-old Broomall driver appeared to be intoxicated, police said, and so he was taken to Springfield Hospital, had blood drawn, and was then transported to the Springfield Police Station. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and related motor vehicle violations and was later released to a relative. Police said …

Police Make 2 DUI Arrests

The drivers in the two separate incidents both failed field sobriety tests, police say.

The following information was supplied by Newtown Township Police. Any arrests or charges mentioned do not indicate guilt or conviction.   DUI—200 block of S. Newtown Street Road at about 2:14 a.m. on March 23. Police observed a black Lincoln Navigator making a U-turn in the area of the Casale Restaurant and decided to catch up to the vehicle in case they were lost or needed assistance, according to the report. At a red traffic light, the Navigator failed to stop at the painted stop bar on the roadway and nearly entered the intersection, according to the report, and was slowly rolling forward into the intersection against the red signal. Drunken Driver Strikes Multiple Vehicles, Police Say

The man was seen swerving back and forth between lanes and striking or nearly striking several vehicles, police say.

The following information was supplied by Marple Township Police. Any arrests or charges mentioned do not indicate guilt or conviction. On Feb. 16 at about 6:43 p.m. police responded to West Chester Pike near Malin Road for a report of a maroon Saturn, driving recklessly. Another driver told police she observed the vehicle swerving back and forth between lanes, nearly striking multiple cars and also striking another witnesses' vehicle, according to the report. Police pulled the driver, a 50-year-old Philadelphia man, over and the man had trouble answering basic questions, and began handing the officer money when asked for his license, registration and proof of insurance, according to the report. Man Hits Lights, Admits to 2 Martinis, Police Say

The man told police he only had two martinis at La Locanda in Edgmont before crashing into the Newtown Square Corporate Campus sign.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–On Jan. 24 at approximately 5:50 p.m., Newtown police responded to the area of West Chester Pike/Rt. 3 and Campus Boulevard for a report of a possible medical emergency. According to the report, a man was reported to be slumped over the wheel of a vehicle. Upon arrival, police observed the vehicle facing southbound in the northbound exit of West Chester Pike. In addition, police immediately noticed the vehicle had front-end damage and appeared the vehicle struck the curb as well as the lights that illuminate the Newtown Square Corporate Campus sign. Police were able to speak with the driver of the vehicle, who was sitting in the driver’s seat. No passengers were reported in the vehicle. The man was identified as a 41-year-…

DUI Arrest Following Two-Vehicle Crash on St. Albans

The Newtown Square man had a recorded 0.156 percent BAC level.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–On Jan. 31 at approximately 4:40 p.m., Newtown police responded to the unit block of Saint Albans Avenue for a two-vehicle crash with no injuries reported. Upon arrival, police observed a Cadillac parked directly behind a gray pick-up, both occupied by only one person in each vehicle. Police approached the driver of the Cadillac and the driver opened his door to which police immediately detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle, according to the report. According to the report, police observed 24 unopened cans of beer sitting on the passenger floor of the vehicle. Blotter: Empty Beer Cans, DUI Arrest in Traffic Stop

NEWTOWN SQUARE–On Jan. 2 at approximately 4:40 p.m., Newtown police was stopped facing eastbound on West Chester Pike/Route 3 at the intersection of Newtown Street Road/Route 252 in the left lane when they observed an Infiniti stopped in the right lane with a December 2012 registration sticker. As police began to travel eastbound on West Chester Pike, police began to run the vehicle’s registration through the NCIC system which confirmed that the registration had been expired at the end of December 2012. Police then initiated a vehicle stop on the Infiniti and activated their emergency lights and siren, just as the vehicle was pulling into the entrance of the Newtown Square Shopping Center. NEWTOWN SQUARE–On Dec. 16 at approximately 3:30 a.m., Newtown police was on patrol traveling west on West Chester Pike/Rt. 3 in the area of Alice Grim Boulevard and the 4700 block of Rt. 3. As police approached the traffic light at Alice Grim Blvd., police observed a white vehicle stopped at a steady green signal facing westbound. According to the report, the brake lights of the vehicle were illuminated and police pulled in behind the vehicle and activated their emergency lights in an attempt to get the vehicle to move. When police approached the driver's side of the vehicle, they found a woman leaning forward with her head against the steering wheel, according to the report. Broken Traffic Laws Result in Vehicle Stop, DUI Arrest On July 19 at approximately 3:58 a.m., police began to follow a silver Toyota Avalon at the 4200 block of West Chester Pike after noticing its right turn signal was activated with no upcoming right turn signals available, according to the report. The vehicle was pulled over after traveling at a speed of approximately 35 mph in a posted 55 mph zone, according to the report. As a police officer approached the stopped vehicle, it began to move in reverse and came close to striking the front of the police patrol car before stopping, according to the report.
