Go Green in Marple Newtown

Marple Hosts Free Shred Fest Saturday

Marple Township is offering its residents a day to shred personal documents in a safe manner on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

BROOMALL–Marple Township is offering its residents a free Shred Fest event on Saturday morning to shred personal and confidential documents in a safe manner. Residents can take up to four boxes of personal documents to be destroyed from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Though Shred Fest is open to the entire community, the township is discouraging businesses. The event will take place at the Old Marple School yard located off of West Chester Pike & N. Malin Rd. in Broomall. Wiggins Shredding will be the company shredding the documents on Saturday.

Police Blotter: Vehicle Stolen, Home Burglary, Thefts From Cars

The following information has been supplied by the Marple Police Department. If arrests or charges are mentioned, they do not indicate guilt or a conviction.

On May 14 at approximately 2 p.m., Marple police responded to the 500 block of Warren Blvd. for a reported vandalism incident. Upon arrival, police spoke to the homeowner who reported that a hanging flower basket that was given to them for Mother’s Day had been vandalized. The homeowners showed police where the plastic pot was cracked and told police that they have been the victims of several acts of vandalism over the past couple of years, according to the incident report. According to the report, they have had floodlights broken, windows banged on, and some type of acid dumped onto their car. DCCC Seeks Waiver Request To Build Pole Barn

The community college is hoping to seek a waiver request to build a 30x60 feet pole barn on its Marple campus.

BROOMALL–Delaware County Community College is seeking a land development waiver request from Marple Township to build a storage shelter on the college's Marple campus behind the tennis courts. "This is an association with the construction of a pole barn they need for storage of materials," explained Township Manager Anthony Hamaday. The proposed barn is expected to be approximately 30x60-feet. According to Hamaday, the college has a policy in which they are not allowed to throw away any equipment. The college must either sell it or store it, in which case they are hoping to store it in the pole barn. Status of Marple Billboards Case Against BIG

Jim Byrne, the attorney representing Marple Township in the billboards case against Bartkowski Investment Group, provided an update about the status of the case at Monday night's commissioners meeting.

BROOMALL–Filling in for Marple Township Solicitor Adam Matlawski at Monday night's commissioners meeting was Jim Byrne–who also represents Marple and Newtown townships in the billboard case against Bartkowski Investment Group (BIG). Byrne said unlike many other townships, Marple has already been to the Commonwealth Court with BIG on the billboards case. The latest decision on the case came back in favor with the township. "Now we're back in the Common Pleas Court on a declaratory judgment action that was filed by the BIG company and there's going to be a trial on that–it's a non-jury trial and the trial probably won't take that long on that case," said Byrne. The trial date has been scheduled for Aug. 6th at the Court of Common Pleas. The …

Marple Police Officers Commended For Their Actions

Marple Police Chief and the Marple Township Board of Commissioners awarded several Marple police officers for their merit.

BROOMALL–Officers in blue lined the perimeter of the meeting room in the Marple Township Municipal building at Monday night's Board of Commissioners work session meeting. A handful of Marple police officers were publicly recognized for their actions of merit during specific situations that occured within the past year. The officers were given an award of commendation by Marple Police Chief Tom Murray and Marple Commissioners President Michael Molinaro. Police Blotter: Rash of Thefts From Cars (Again), Man Steals Gas From Another Pump, and More

On May 1 at approximately 7:37 a.m. Marple police responded to The Iron Shop on Reed Road for a burglary discovered. Upon arrival, police spoke with the owner who told police that he discovered on April 30th a rear door to the shop area was forced open and someone had entered the shop. According to the report, two 55-gallon drums filled with an estimated $5,000 worth of scrap metal was taken as well as welding tools. Police are further investigating this incident. On May 1 at approximately 9:27 a.m., police responded to Hair West on 57 S. Sproul Road for a reported theft. Upon arrival, police met with an employee who told police when she had arrived and unlocked the salon that day, she noticed white spray paint on the floors and walls. The…

Jen, I totally agree. When I heard they were building the Walmart, I knew crime would go up and property value down. It's sad to see, but it's only going to get worse. I also notice a lot more trash on the streets and shady people roaming the area.   more ›

Photos: Broomall Rotary's Junior Olympics

The Broomall Rotary held its annual Junior Olympics at Veteran's Park on Sunday, April 29.

BROOMALL–Dozens of children were seen at Veteran's Memorial Park in Broomall on Sunday for the Broomall Rotary's annual Junior Olympics. The event, which is going on approximately nine years now, is dedicated to the children in the Marple Newtown community and beyond. The event includes a "broad" jump, 30- and 50-yard dashes, depending on the child's age, a ball throw, and more. The event is organized by Broomall Rotarian Bill Buchanan and volunteers help annually, including the Marple Newtown High School Tigers football team and Interact Club. Marple And Newtown To Plant Trees For Arbor Day

Both Marple and Newtown communities will participate in recognizing Arbor Day, April 27th, by planting trees.

On the heels of Earth Day and in recognition of Arbor Day on Friday, both Marple and Newtown townships will be planting trees around town. Spearheaded by Marple Township's Tree Commission, officials and members of the community will gather on Friday at 4 p.m. at Marple Gardens park off of Ann Road in Broomall. The celebration will include light refreshments and a demonstration of how to plant a bare root tree. In Newtown, the township's Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) will hold the tree planting event at 5 p.m. at Drexel Lodge Park. Brief remarks will be made from Mostardi Nursery, the Delaware County Conservation District and the U.S. Forestry Service. Seven trees will be planted and light refreshments will be served.
