Moms Talk

One Mom's New Year's Resolutions

I love making New Years resolutions that are sure-fire made-to-order failures. But this year will be different, I swear.

When the clock strikes midnight at the beginning of each new year, I have usually already made up my list of resolutions: no more fast food, no candy or junk food, no more cursing, watch less television, more reading, less eating, lose some weight, go to the gym, get organized, get healthy and be a better mom. According to Ian Savitz, head of operations for FACTS Fitness at Ellis Athletic Center in Newtown Square, this time of the year is "historically crunch time." Savitz said the fitness center was "mobbed" on New Year's Eve and has been busy since then, answering inquiries about the gym, conducting gym tours and signing on new members. The gym sees an average of 100 new members sign up in the month of January alone, said Savitz. Michael Massafra, head personal trainer at the gym, said ever year the New Year's resolution crew in January often seek the same things such as weight loss or…

Locals Talk About Their New Year's Resolutions

People around Newtown Square share their hopeful resolutions for the new year.

Newtown Square—With New Year's Eve fast approaching, many locals are just now starting to think about what resolutions they might make to themselves for a better 2011. Roughly half of the people interviewed hadn't gotten around to it yet—or weren't planning to make any at all. "Oh, I don't do that anymore," said a smiling Jerry Maher, a popular man at The Ale House. "I stopped disappointing myself years ago." Overall health seemed to be the leading thought on locals' minds this December. Jim Hunter, like so many people at this time of year, said that he intended on trying to shed a few pounds. Jack Dwyer, a native of the Marple Newtown area for all of his 53 years, had a rough 2010 due to several surgeries to his hip, shoulder and both …
