Do you have cultural or family traditions that make the season brighter?
The holidays are a time for family, immediate and extended. Family and the holiday traditions can be what make the holidays the most special time of the year. There are some classic holiday traditions, such as Christmas trees, gift exchanges, Christmas cookies, Christmas music and more. When I was a child, we used to go to a cut your own Christmas tree farm with my grandparents. I remember thinking the giant Santa statue at the Christmas tree farm and the hot chocolate after we cut down the tree were my favorite parts. We never decorated the tree until Christmas Eve and we always left a few ornaments for Santa to finish off the tree. My son is still young and although we are continuing some of our older traditions, we are also starting new…

From different terms to different ways of celebrating, people have different ways of giving thanks.
Thanksgiving traditions vary by region and by family. I grew up spending my Thanksgiving with family in one part of the Philadelphia area or another: Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, Haverford, Havertown, Wayne, Paoli or Media. To my family, Thanksgiving was about being together. The Thanksgiving gatherings started out a little bit like a cocktail party, but it was about connecting and catching up with family members who we didn’t see frequently. My family didn’t turn on the TV and watch the football game. That just wasn’t part of our tradition. Now, I’m married and frequently spend Thanksgiving with my in-laws, where the TV is frequently on and they call stuffing “dressing.” The food on the table is a lot more starch-based than I’m used to, but …

Patch asked local parents what they do with their kids to celebrate the Fourth of July.
Each week in Moms Talk, our Moms Council consisting of local parents, take your questions, gives advice and share solutions. Question: What do you do to celebrate July 4th? Are there any places in the area that have the best fireworks? Do you have any fun traditions you do every year with the kids? Answer from Merrie Staurowsky (mom of 3): We go to the Marple Newtown parade every year. My daughter goes with her dancing school and the boys and I decorate a wagon or scooter and walk the parade. They love to watch the parade, too, and come home with a ton of candy. One special note to all parents who bring their kids to the parade: please keep a close eye on them. There are all kinds of vehicles along the parade route and kids really need …

Despite over 30 years in America, Marple Newtown Patch food writer Clara Park shares her Korean roots and traditions from the old country.
When most Americans think of New Year's traditions, most think of champagne, health-conscious resolutions, and Dick Clark at Times Square. However, I don't. I think of money and rice cakes swimming in a silky beef broth with long, thin pieces of egg omelet, slender strips of nori (dried seaweed) and black pepper. You see, I was born in Philadelphia but I grew up in a strictly South Korean household. There are times when it's great to be Korean (although my Korean marine father will tell you it's always great). Ask any Korean kid what their favorite holiday is and they will usually say, "New Year's Day." A Korean New Year's Day celebration brings together all family members from near and far. It was one of the few times of the year that all…
