Do Local Colleges Require Gym Credits?

A recent study looks at the number of colleges that require gym classes and the affect of physical activity on education.

  According to a recent study by Oregon State University, the number of colleges and universities that require physical education classes is at 39 percent, a historic low. The study looked at data from 354 randomly selected four-year universities and colleges, beginning in the 1920s when 97 percent of institutions required physical education classes. "Brain scans have shown that physical activity improves the area of the brain involved with high-level decision making,” said Brad Cardinal, lead author of the study. “In addition, we know employers often are concerned about employee health, in part because physically active employees attend work more and tend to perform better." Local Colleges Rank High on Forbes Top Colleges List

See where area schools rank on Forbes list of Top Colleges.

Philadelphia area college fare well on Forbes' America's Top Colleges list. Swathmore did the best among local schools with the University of Pennsylvania not too far behind. Haverford College's rank would have been higher, according to Forbes, but there was a data error. (Click here for more on that story.) Bryn Mawr College and Villanova University round out the rest of the local schools making the top 100. Nearly 20 Marple Newtown residents graduated from Villanova University's Class of 2012.

18 Marple Newtown-based students recently graduated from Villanova University in the 2012 class, who earned bachelor and master degrees, according to a release from the university. What Do Local Colleges Cost?

Find out what tuition, fees and room and board will cost you for 2012-2013 at a number of suburban Philadelphia school.

  The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education this week approved a 3 percent tuition increase for the 14 state schools, including West Chester University for the 2012-13 academic year. The total tuition cost for a full time, resident undergraduate student will be $6,428. Taking into account additional fees, room and board, the average total cost for a state university is about $16,000, said PASSHE spokesperson Kenn Marshall. So, what do other local colleges cost? Dean's List students must maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4-point scale and must be enrolled full time to earn Dean's List status for a semester. Local students from Marple and Newtown were named to Villanova University, Thomas Jefferson University, Ithaca College, Rider University, and Grove City College Dean's Lists for the Fall 2011 semester.

Marple and Newtown residents were recently named on their college's Dean's List for the fall 2011 semester. Dean's List students must maintain at least a grade point average of 3.3 or above on a 4-point scale at some schools while others require students to maintain at least a 3.5 or above on a 4-point scale. All students must have also attempted at least 12 credits of course work. Three's a Charm, MNHS Cheerleaders Take Another Trophy

Marple Newtown High School varsity cheerleaders take home another first place trophy at the 9th Annual Wildcat Blue Devil Challenge at Villanova University on Jan. 21.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–The Marple Newtown High School varsity cheerleaders won another first place trophy in the Medium Varsity Division at the 9th Annual Wildcat Blue Devil Challenge at Villanova University on Saturday, Jan. 21. This is the third week and competition in a row that the girls have won first place. The squad is getting pumped for Nationals in Florida that will take place Feb. 11 and 12.
