Where in Marple and Newtown townships can you see this type of stone and wooden building? Give your best guess as to where this photo was taken in the comments. Answer: The old stone barn of Robert Mendenhall located behind the Newtown Grill off of S. Newtown Street Road. According to the Newtown Grill's website, Robert t Mendenhall was a blacksmith as well as an innkeeper (having owned the Newtown Square Hotel property from 1783 to1796). In 1805, the stone farmhouse was encompassed by 72 acres of land which contained a log barn and a log shop. The old tavern stands at the corner of Goshen and Newtown Street roads, the central square of the town. Internationally known artist Benjamin West's father, John West, lived there with his family intermittently between 1744 (when Benjamin was 6 years old) and 1758.
